Position Summary

Audubon’s Salton Sea and Desert Program invites college students and recent college graduates to learn about the California Desert and to raise the level of awareness of the Salton Sea crisis through public policy, science, education, communications, and community engagement. The Intern will collaborate with the Salton Sea Program team on various aspects of the Program, including assisting with bird surveys, social media management, blog posts, and coordinating educational seminars and trips to the Salton Sea and Desert with community members, college students, and local high schools. The Intern will also collaborate with the California Desert team through events, community engagement, and education initiatives. This is a 6-month part-time position, working 10-15 hours a week from October 2025 to March 2026. The Intern works under the guidance and direct supervision of the Senior Education Coordinator; however, the entire staff is available to interns for special interest sessions, guidance, and assistance. The intern may also work with program volunteers, partners, the public, schoolteachers, and students. The intern will have the opportunity to learn and gain valuable skills related to restoration projects, community engagement, science, public health, writing, and social media.


This is an on-site position located at the Audubon Salton Sea Program, Palm Desert, CA


Compensation:


$19.00-$20.00 / hour


Essential Functions:
  • Assist in the field during bird surveys. The intern will assist with bird survey data collection and data entry, as well as coordinating volunteers and student groups who may participate in the surveys.

  • Help in coordinating visits and educational presentations on various topics related to the Sea with the local high school science club.

  • Participate in, and assist with, Audubon-led Salton Sea Leadership Program

  • Participate in Protect California Desert Coalition or Chuckwalla National Monument-related events

  • Utilize blogging, social media, and traditional media to communicate Audubon’s Salton Sea and Desert Program message to the community at large.

  • Develop a volunteer database and newsletter for the program to boost volunteer numbers and increase program visibility in the community.

  • Aid in organizing field trips to the Salton Sea and surrounding Desert area for stakeholders in the Coachella and Imperial Valleys, such as academic institutions, faith-based groups, local high schools, tribal nations, and environmental justice partners.

  • Attend public meetings hosted by the community and other stakeholders related to Salton Sea or California Desert happenings.

  • Work with the Salton Sea science team to coordinate data collection, surveys, and reports.

  • Increase the diversity of audiences engaged in advocating for the Salton Sea and Deserts.

  • Willingness to work occasional weekends or evenings to support program activities and events.

  • Other activities assigned by Audubon Staff

  • Make a final presentation to Salton Sea Audubon Team.

  • Maintains and fosters culture of safety.


  • Qualifications and Experience:
  • Completion of at least two years of college coursework in communications, public policy or health, environmental or life sciences, or science education.

  • Writing experience preferred.

  • Confident in leading a group and initiating activities, working independently, and team teaching.

  • Comfortable with public speaking to small or large groups.

  • Social media savvy, including knowledge of Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.

  • Strong work ethic, self-motivated, flexibility, a desire to learn, and the ability to work well with others.

  • A current driver’s license or state issued ID, and reliable transportation to and from the office and/or events.

  • Must be able to transport items of up to 30lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Positive attitude and commitment to environmental stewardship.
