Job Summary
The Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture Food and Environment, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources seeks a candidate with strong communication skills and attention to detail for their Forestry Research Assistant role.

The Forestry Research Assistant will work closely with Green Forests Work staff and other project partners to manage current planting projects, secure additional partners to expand reforestation opportunities on mine lands, and work with private landowners, coal operators, state and federal agencies, conservation/environmental groups, and other partners on the planning, design, and implementation of projects.

Duty location will be Lexington, Kentucky, with work occurring throughout Appalachia, but mainly concentrated in southern West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, and eastern Tennessee.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
Experience with geographic information systems (GIS/GPS) and mapping (e.g. ArcGIS) is preferred. Knowledge of techniques for monitoring and processing data from wildlife acoustic monitoring systems is required. Demonstrated ability to identify birds in Appalachia by sight and sound.
Does this position have supervisory responsibilities? NoPreferred Education/Experience
The preferred candidate will have experience working on restoration or reforestation projects, and working with diverse partners such as energy companies, state and federal agencies and non-profit organizations. Position will require frequent overnight travel, extensive work in the field, and the development of numerous professional contacts.

BA + 1 year experience preferred.
