The Mechanical Engineer - Pressure Vessel / Pressure Vessel Human Occupied will support Commercial Engineering in Houston, TX. We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer with expertise in pressure vessels for human-occupied vehicles and subsea habitats. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, analysis, testing, and lifecycle support of man-rated subsea pressure hulls and related systems. This role requires strong technical knowledge of pressure vessel design, subsea materials, and structural mechanics, as well as the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, reliable, and compliant solutions.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the design and structural analysis of man-rated pressure vessels and subsea structures, including hulls, hatches, seals, and penetrators.
  • Perform pressure containment and structural integrity assessments in accordance with ASME, DNV, and other applicable classification standards for human-occupied systems.
  • Develop detailed design documentation, manufacturing specifications, and test procedures for subsea habitats and submersibles.
  • Provide engineering support for fabrication, welding, non-destructive examination (NDE), assembly, and integration of pressure systems.
  • Conduct risk assessments, including failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA/FMECA), to ensure safety and reliability for occupants.
  • Collaborate with classification societies, regulatory agencies, and client representatives to ensure compliance with man-rated subsea system requirements.
  • Support prototype and qualification testing, including hydrostatic, hyperbaric, and full-scale load tests.
  • Participate in troubleshooting, inspections, and root cause analysis of subsea pressure vessel issues.
  • Ensure adherence to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) requirements in all engineering and testing activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED:

  • This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status due to the sensitivity of customer related information.
  • Must have a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, ocean engineering, or related discipline.
  • Requires 3+ years of recent and related work experience in pressure vessel design and analysis, ideally with direct involvement in human-occupied submersibles, habitats, or similar applications.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant subsea and pressure vessel codes.
  • Hands-on experience with finite element analysis tools (ANSYS, Abaqus, or equivalent) for structural and pressure assessments.
  • Strong background in metallurgy, fatigue, fracture mechanics, and welding processes relevant to subsea environments.
  • Experience with hydrostatic, hyperbaric, and man-rated testing protocols.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills for engineering reports and client documentation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary, multicultural engineering teams.
  • In-depth knowledge of ASME Section VIII, DNV-RU-UWT, and other relevant subsea and pressure vessel codes.

DESIRED:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) credential.
  • Masters degree in a related field.
  • Experience with classification society approval processes (ABS, DNV, Lloyd's Register) for manned subsea systems.
  • Knowledge of deepwater and ultra-deepwater operational challenges.
  • Familiarity with digital twin technologies or structural health monitoring for subsea assets.
  • Experience contributing to multidisciplinary subsea projects, including life support, control systems, or integration with topside infrastructure.

WORK LOCATION:


  • This position is located onsite.
  • This position may require some travel.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
