Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) is seeking current interns for a Laboratory Internship and/or Co-op with our Research & Development team in our Waltham office location for the Spring 2026 term.

As an Intern or Co-op, you will work side-by-side with industry-leading experts in the office and in the field to gain hands-on experience while applying classroom knowledge to real-world challenges. 

What Youll Be Doing:

  • Perform and monitor tests associated with glass, cement, piping, concrete, bricks, slate, tile, coatings, steel, CFRP, plastics, insulation, roofing etc.
  • Collect, record, conduct basic analysis of test data, and notify supervisor when unusual data is recognized
  • Fabricate and/or prepare test specimens and test fixtures in lab or field using various equipment
  • Assist with the management of the lab equipment inventory; sign equipment in/out, gather equipment for staff, maintain equipment records, perform maintenance and calibration
  • Set up machines, build test frames and ensure the tests are running properly while receiving supervision and assistance
  • Responsible for receipt and logging of incoming deliveries (equipment, samples, and supplies)
  • Assists senior staff in management of sample in storage
  • Operate forklift (SGH will train)
  • Assist with concrete mixing, cutting, and polishing (SGH will train)
  • Assist with laboratory physical testing setup and component fabrication/assembly

What Youll Need:

  • Students should have a major in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, architecture, or architectural engineering.

  • Maintain high grades in their studies, interested in learning through hands-on work experience in a consulting engineering environment.

  • Enthusiastic about the challenges associated with the development of sophisticated engineering work product in an atmosphere of high professionalism. 

  • Successful candidates must have strong communication abilities.

Compensation:

Base hourly rate range is below and will depend on the candidates education level.

Full-time Temporary are eligible for a discretionary bonus program, medical insurance and paid holidays and sick leave.

Technical Intern:
$28.50—$35.75 USD
