Noyes Lab Research Scientist

This position is in the Computational and Systems Biology Department which is part of the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.

Job Summary

Conducts independent scientific research projects from inception to presentation. Prepares and crafts various documentations of research results into manuscripts, proposals, grant applications, and presentations. Trains undergraduates and research technicians. Manages laboratory policies and coordinates project development in collaboration with other specialists.

Essential Functions

The position requires coordinating multiple projects that focus large, tissue culture screens to develop genetic therapies and define novel pathways for cell-type determination. These experiments require significant experience working with general and specialized cell lines, including a broad understanding of transfection protocols to optimize transfection efficiency in difficult to use cell lines. In addition, the candidate should have ample experience prepping DNA and/or RNA from these difficult cells for downstream, high throughput sequencing. The role will also require the demonstrated ability to use computational tools for the support and analysis of large-scale transcriptomics data.

This position will serve as the lab manager and therefor requires the ability to train students and staff in the common techniques used by the lab. As a result, the role will also require some support and guidance for other ongoing projects in the lab. The role will further require leadership in preparing funding applications and communication and coordination with the PI, collaborators and funders, and in developing manuscripts and presenting the lab's research at local, national and international conferences.

Physical Effort

Physical effort associated with wet lab work, i.e. standing while conducting experiments, sitting while working on computer, walking back and forth in the lab to sinks and microscopes, lifting packages less than 20lbs., etc.
