What You Will Do

The Music Coach leads and inspires a diverse group of beginners, ages 7-17 in a classroom setting. This position involves teaching basic music skills, fostering a love for music, and helping students from under-served communities develop their musical talents in a supportive and inclusive environment. The Music Coach is responsible for creating a fun and engaging curriculum that introduces students to music theory, basic instrument techniques, singing, rhythm and creative expression. The music coach guides students through structured lessons, fosters teamwork and offers individual attention to help each student thrive and works to ensure that all students feel valued, respected and encouraged in a safe, inclusive and supportive environment. Key responsibilities for this position include music instruction, lesson planning, coordinating activities, individual coaching, performance preparation and mentoring.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Experience teaching or mentoring children in music
Proficiency in at least one musical instrument (e.g., guitar, piano, drums, voice, etc.) and basic music theory
Passion for working with children, especially from under served communities
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage with participant's parents and other staff
Ability to create an inclusive and supportive environment for children of diverse background and abilities
Ability to work in a team environment and adapt to different learning styles

Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience working with children ages 7 through 17
Experience in a classroom setting
Experience with new/beginning level students
Experience with lesson plan development in support of learning outcomes
Ability to teach multiple instruments (such as piano, violin, horns, drums) basic musical genres
Experience in directing music performances or showcases
Knowledge of diverse music genres and cultures

About Extra Help Positions:

Extra Help job listings typically close three days after the opening date, unless specified in the closing date. Extra Help employees are appointed to fulfill casual or emergent needs within the university. The amount of time for which services are needed is not usually predictable and payment for work performed is on an hourly basis and based on actual hours worked. Workdays and hours may vary according to departmental requirements. Extra Help employees do not receive SIUE benefits, holiday pay or paid sick or vacation leave.

Extra Help employees are required by State Universities Civil Service System rules to take a 30-calendar-day break after working 900 hours. At the end of the 30 days, you may begin another 900-hour employment cycle in a new position if available. Working Extra Help will in no way affect any other employment opportunities with SIUE, including your position on and Civil Service register. There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment.

Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.

Illinois residency requires proof of a valid Illinois Driver's License or state of Illinois ID Card. Failure to produce the required documentation within 180 calendar days will result in immediate termination of employment.

The screening process will encompass a criminal background check and, where applicable, other background checks such as a drug screen, verification of employment and education or licensure/certification, reference checks, and/or checks with relevant government registries. Additional Information: SIUE will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in the United States and visa sponsorship for this position will not be provided. International students at SIUE on F-1 or J-1 visas are not eligible for full-time or part-time civil service positions with permanent status.
