Main Purpose of Role:
This Appeals Clerk position has two primary duties: 1. Motions/Orders Duty: The Appeals Clerks handles the intake of motions and other filings with the Court; drafts appropriate letters, orders, notices for review and signature; assigns filings to other staff (e.g. Staff Attorneys) as appropriate; and processes orders, correspondence, and notices issued by the Court; and 2. Courtroom Duty: The Appeals Clerk also serves as a courtroom clerk for oral argument held by the Court, which proceedings are held during the first 8 business days of each month.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Processes Court orders, including docketing, scanning, and ensuring that all parties are served.
Monitors the Court?s filing queue; processes motions for special admission, voluntary dismissals, stipulations, and other motions/papers filed with the Court.
Tracks time standards for the issuance of mandates upon the disposition of appeals other than by opinion. Process the filing of mandates issued by the ; ensures that all parties are served, that the mandate is transmitted to the circuit court, and that the record is set for return to the originating court.
Assists in other duties to ensure quality control, including reviewing and issuing brief deficiency orders when litigants? briefs do not confirm to the Rules.
Incumbent will serve in the courtroom one day per month and as a backup as needed.
Assists with customer service, including answering telephones and assisting individuals coming to the Court to file papers or obtain information.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School diploma (or GED equivalent).
Experience: Two (2) years of work experience, to include one (1) year in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.
Note:
A bachelor?s degree may substitute the required work experience.
A paralegal/associate?s degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.
A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures.
Knowledge of office practices and procedures.
Knowledge of business English, including proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Skill in:
Skill in using office productivity software to monitor workflow.
Ability to:
Ability to balance multiple conflicting priorities.
Ability to communicate case information to other court personnel, attorneys, and self-represented parties.
Ability to communicate effectively in person, in writing and via telephone.
