Research Administrator



The Research Administrator will assist the Director of Research Administration in the School of Public Health Dean's Office. Responsibilities are advanced and multidimensional, including participation in all levels of research administration. The Research Administrator will support the pre- and post-award related tasks for multiple departments within the School. Responsible for school-level review of all sponsored project submissions, award activations, and modification requests. Instructs and guides faculty and support staff with applications and proposal budgets for sponsored research. Collaborates with faculty and administrators in other University departments and at other institutions and foundations. Solves problems and manages multiple priorities with strict deadlines. Interprets and applies University and funding agency policies. Works with the Director of Research Administration to provide support to other departments. Assists the Director of Research Administration with preparing financial reports for internal use and to meet sponsor requirements. Contributes to the development of school-wide policies and procedures for grant submissions and reporting.


Job Summary

Performs pre- and post-award accounting duties for very complex grants and contracts. Prepares, negotiates, and monitors very complex grants, contracts, subcontracts, and budgets. Prepares complex government applications and reports and interprets policy and procedure. Monitors account activity, performs internal audits, processes budget modifications, analyzes financials, and reviews routine reports. Develops and implements accounting techniques and procedures for operational improvements and assists with managing special projects and preparing operating budgets.


Essential Functions

This position requires an individual with diverse grant submission experience in order to accurately review all departmental submissions. The position also requires someone with experience in research administration, specifically in pre- and post-award, so that they can support multiple departments. Must be able to use a computer and Microsoft Office suite programs proficiently, as well as financial software systems, including but not limited to Concur, Panther Express, PERIS, Fiscal Panther, and Tableau. Must be able to effectively communicate electronically and in person. Work is frequently conducted via email, telephone, in-person meetings, or using video communication technology (such as Zoom, Teams, etc). Must demonstrate the ability to work under pressure and constant deadlines.


Physical Effort

The position is generally sedentary; must be able to spend extended periods of time at the computer. Requires the ability to travel SPH building/campus and the Oakland area to attend meetings as needed.
