Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assigned to the TS EMPIRE STATE Ship to facilitate Deck Maintenance Labs with overall supervision of Deck Cadets engaged in this ship work.
  • Maintenance Work Order System
  • Responsible for responding to the increased requirements imposed by the mandated development of a Shipboard Management System which requires a maintenance program and PMs in addition to associated documentation
  • Overall supervision of re-instated Saturday Ship Work periods
  • Participation on Summer Sea Term (SST) would be required for at least one half of the SST (Cruise A or Cruise B) with duties to include training and development of cadets onboard the ship during SSTs by a subject matter expert capable of mentoring the nearly 500+ deck Cadets that go on SST each summer to hone their skills and apply them practically when at sea
  • A direct advisor and mentor to deck Cadets in the deck license program specifically with the shipboard specific training for those Cadets participating in their 1/C training cruise
  • Participates in the Indoctrination Program working with basic safety and familiarization training and works with Cadet IDO leadership to develop MUG deck training programs during the academic semesters
  • Models appropriate character and strong ethics through discipline behavior and professional appearance, as a representative of SUNY Maritime College
  • The position entails the daily shaping of the future leaders of global industries and the military, including those specializing in the Maritime profession, and the transportation and business sectors; As such this position requires the individual to maintain the highest standards of conduct and appearance, as well as actively leading and managing the development and maturation of the license cadets
  • The successful candidate is the liaison between the ship, the regiment, academia and professional development programs
  • When necessary, works with the Dean of Admissions to recruit potential students; May be required to attend Open Houses and other events to make presentations designed to showcase the College and in particular the engine training program on the ship

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Active 3/M license
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Ability to prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks
  • Demonstrate organizational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong desire to work in a student-oriented environment in higher education
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license and Transportation Worker's Identification (TWIC) and passport for international travel
  • Experience in education, state, or large city system

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • Industry experience


Additional Information:

Classification/Salary Range: The Third Mate Compliance Officer is a UUP position. The anticipated salary range for the position is $80,000 to $85,000 annually, with an outstanding benefits package. Special Notes: This is a full-time calendar year (12 month) appointment UUP Position. Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
