Function of Position:

The Skilled Trades Lab Assistant will be responsible for supporting the Instructors of the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship programs for the FWD Center of Monroe Community College at the Downtown Campus and its operations of the educational and laboratory environments, ensuring that all tasks related to course setup, lab maintenance, and instructional support are completed with efficiency and accuracy. This role is vital in ensuring that all Lab and classroom materials, and supplies, are available, properly stocked, and maintained to support effective learning experiences.

This position requires proficiency in using software applications such as, My MCC, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams). The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and demonstrate an understanding of the unique requirements of a lab-based instructional environment as it's related to general construction, Plumbing, Electrical, and HVAC.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lab Setup and Maintenance:
    • Assist with lab and equipment setup and maintenance to ensure a safe and functional learning environment.
    • Create and submit facility work orders for required development, repairs, maintenance, and work request to keep the lab environment operational.
  • Inventory and Procurement:
    • Manage / inventory materials, supplies, and curriculum inventories, ensuring that all necessary items are stocked and available for use.
    • Identify and communicate required lab materials, and supplies in accordance with program needs.
  • Instructor and Student Support:
    • Maintain and file Student Sign in sheets and ensure Instructors are regularly updating the Bright Space Attendance Log.
    • Collect, and file module exams to assist instructors and confirm the tracking of student progress using "Form 200" in the Bright Space course shells
    • Assist instructors in the lab by providing instructional and operational support, organization and managing lab resources, and supporting a productive learning environment.
    • Track needs, communicate and document any issues of concerns.
    • Suggest continuous improvements as identified.
  • Systems and Software Proficiency:
    • Proficiently use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) for documentation, reporting, and communication.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: A minimum of an Associate's degree or equivalent work experience in a relevant field
  • Experience: At least 2 years of experience as a Lab Assistant, Lab Technician, Shop Assistant, or Teachers Assistant, preferably in an educational / technical training, or construction / facilities environment
  • Skills:
    • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
    • Excellent communication skills (interpersonal, written and verbal)
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Ability to work with Apprenticeship students in a lab environment.
    • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with lab environments and the organization / maintenance of instructional materials and equipment as related to the Construction, Plumbing, Electrical, and HVAC
  • OSHA 10

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certifications: 5S organization system
  • OSHA 30
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift and carry supplies and equipment (up to 50 lbs.)
  • Ability to set up, breakdown, and maintain lab storage and equipment, which may require bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods


Additional Information:

Salary Range: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour, depending on qualifications.
Work Schedule: 20 hours / week, Monday-Thursday 3:30pm-8:30pm
