Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and three years of related experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel Word, and Adobe Acrobat is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
A master’s degree is preferred and will substitute for one year of the required experience. Experience working directly with the federal government and agencies is preferred.
Job Description Summary
The University of South Alabama’s department of Governmental Relations is seeking to hire an Assistant Director, Governmental Relations. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.
Essential Functions
These are the job duties required of the position.
Essential Functions
- Reports to the Vice President, Governmental Relations and assists in coordinating governmental relations activities at the federal, state, and local level, for the University and USA Health System, as directed.
- Develops and cultivates relationships with governmental officials and policy makers on legislative and other activities as directed by the Vice President, Governmental Relations.
- Develops and maintains knowledge and understanding of issues pertaining to higher education, research, health care, and academic medical centers and their relationships to government.
- Monitors proposed state and federal legislation and public policy related to higher education and healthcare, determines potential impacts, and reports to the Vice President.
- Interprets local, state, and federal government related legal documents, budget, financial and legislative items.
- Identifies funding opportunities for academics, healthcare and research at various state and federal agencies.
- Maintains knowledge and understanding on federal authorizing and appropriations (including community project funding requests) legislation.
- Compiles, catalog and processes South Alabama’s annual federal appropriations requests, including congressionally directed spending requests.
- Maintains multiple databases such as local, state and federal contact information, funding opportunities, and bill tracking software.
- Researches, prepares/develop materials for use in meetings.
- Coordinates meetings to include preparing agendas/handouts/reports and takes/prepares minutes/ notifying participants of the topics to be discussed.
- Assists in organizing , managing, and directing the production of various Governmental Relations communications and marketing materials as they relate to the University and the USA Health System.
- Manages special projects as assigned in addition to coordination, planning, and execution of departmental events (to include small and large scale events, executive meetings, conferences, briefings, tours, dinners, and seminars.)
- Manages, schedules, and coordinates the operational functions of the Leadership South program under the direction of the Vice President.
- Processes divisional expense reports and invoices and makes travel arrangements.
- Maintains the departmental calendar and email account, prepares correspondence, and maintains calendars for the Vice President as needed.
- Travels frequently requiring overnight stays and weekends.
- Regular and prompt attendance.
- Ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required.
- Related duties as required.
