Position Summary for Chief Information Security Officer (CISO)

The Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) is a key leader responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining NY CREATES' enterprise-wide information security strategy. The CISO will ensure that digital assets, data, research, and intellectual property are protected against internal and external threats in alignment with regulatory, industry, and government security standards. This role is especially critical as NY CREATES operates within a highly regulated and strategically sensitive technology ecosystem.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the design and execution of NY CREATES' information security strategy, security architecture, policies, and procedures to safeguard digital assets across complex research, development, and operational environments.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable cybersecurity regulations, including those related to federal research contracts (e.g., NIST SP 800-171, CMMC, DFARS).
  • Direct and manage incident response efforts, including detection, containment, mitigation, reporting, and recovery.
  • Collaborate with leadership, IT, legal, HR, and research teams to integrate security into operations and organizational culture.
  • Continuously lead the Threat and Vulnerability management program to improve governance, roles and responsibilities, vulnerability risk assessments, remediation processes, and vulnerability-related metrics.
  • Formulate and oversee Security Operation Center (SOC), threat monitoring and response processes.
  • Oversee identity and access management, endpoint protection, data loss prevention, secure network infrastructure and all-encompassing security operations.
  • Develop and deliver cybersecurity training and awareness programs for staff, partners, researchers and special Projects/Programs.
  • Oversee all Network Change Control Boards and third-party audits for compliance and standard security operations.
  • Lead communications and establish regular cadence with external stakeholders including state and federal agencies, academic institutions, and industry partners to ensure consistent, secure collaboration and alignment strategies to better secure NY CREATES' IT and OT environments.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of disaster recovery and business continuity plans. Prepare and execute related test plans to ensure consistency, accuracy and pertinent communication.
  • Supervise the information security team and manage third-party vendors or consultants as needed.


Job Requirements:

Minimum Requirements for Chief Information Security Officer (CISO)

  • Bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, information technology, computer science, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in information security, preferably within a research, technology, government, or higher education environment.
  • Professional certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or CISA are strongly preferred.
  • Deep understanding of information security architecture, risk management, governance frameworks, and compliance requirements (e.g., NIST, CMMC, ISO 27001).
  • Proven experience leading enterprise-wide cybersecurity programs and incident response teams.
  • Strong leadership experience in threat intelligence, security operations and security architecture.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills with the ability to engage stakeholders across diverse disciplines.

Salary Range: $180,000 - $210,000 / annual salary
