Job Description

We’re looking for a hands-on Senior Data Engineer who can design, build, and own production-grade data pipelines on Microsoft Azure—and help us establish the foundation for a scalable data engineering team. This is a player-coach role: you’ll spend most of your time building, but you’ll also define standards, mentor others, and shape our data platform strategy.

If you thrive on shipping reliable pipelines, optimizing for cost and performance, and building pragmatic solutions, this role is for you.

Job Responsibilities

  • Understand our current process.
  • Design and deliver production-ready pipelines using SQL and Azure-based tools.
  • Implement data contracts, quality checks (e.g., Great Expectations), and observability (Azure Monitor, lineage tracking).
  • Stand up a cost-efficient, scalable Azure data stack
  • Establish CI/CD workflows for data pipelines using Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions.
  • Draft runbooks, standards, and templates for future hires.
  • Partner with stakeholders to prioritize high-ROI pipelines for analytics, compliance, and operational reporting.
  • Build and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines for batch and (where needed) streaming data.
  • Optimize performance and cost across our warehouse, analytics, and storage layers.
  • Implement data governance and security using, for example, Azure Purview, Key Vault, and RBAC.
  • Define data modeling standards (CDC, SCD, partitioning, schema evolution).
  • Mentor junior engineers and help design the hiring loop for future team members.
  • Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and reliability improvements.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Power BI integration and semantic modeling.
  • Exposure to data governance tools like Azure Purview.
  • Prior experience leading or developing small teams.

 Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field experience is preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, architecture, or platform administration with at least 3+ years in Azure-based environments.

Compensation

The starting base salary for this position is expected to be between $100,000 to $120,000 annually. Actual pay rate will be determined based on skills, experience (to the extent relevant) and other job-related factors, consistent with applicable law.

Benefits

  • Competitive Base Pay
  • Opportunity to participate in 401k
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, Life/AD&D, LTD and Employee Assistance Program
  • Paid time off for Vacation, Sick and Holidays
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (learn more about the HdL ESOP at: https://www.hdlcompanies.com/about/careers)
