Function of Position:

Responsible for maintaining the Geospatial lab's equipment and software, assisting users with geospatial projects and troubleshooting technical issues. Support purchasing of items for the new GIST (Geospatial Information Science Technology) lab, outreach to local organizations, and small group workshops. Provide in person and remote Geography and GIS tutoring/mentoring fall and spring semesters.

*This is a temporary, grant funded position that may be renewed annually contingent upon availability of grant funding and performance reviews.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with students one on one to support them through GIS labs and projects
  • Provide geospatial support and troubleshoot where students are having difficulty with their lab/project
  • Mentor students with the possibilities career wise in GIS and Geography
  • outreach to one local organization per semester such as RMSC, jumpstart, local high schools.
  • Support GIS software maintenance
  • Update World Map Gallery across campus
  • Support purchasing of GIS software, equipment
  • Support purchasing items for the new GIST Computer lab such as framed maps
  • Engage with MCC's Mapping Club
  • Maintaining the GIST computer lab itself (ex. bulletin boards, displays, keeping things tidy, etc.)
  • Each semester, train small groups of faculty/staff (3-5 people) on the basics of GIS with short trainings 1-2 hour trainings.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Proofreading and testing new lab exercises, and providing feedback
  • Report to Geography/GIST faculty

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned bachelor's degree in Geography or GIS or a related field from a regionally accredited higher education institution
  • Advanced knowledge in geospatial technology, such as web mapping, geospatial programming with Python, remote sensing, spatial analysis, and geospatial data acquisition and management.
  • Proficient with ArcGIS Pro and QGIS

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Geography, GIS, or related field
  • One year of teaching experience and/or outreach to organizations
  • Tutoring and/or mentoring experience with community college students
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently


Additional Information:

Salary: $24/hour

Hours per week: 16-20

Schedule: 10 months, beginning the 2nd week of August through the 2nd week of June, but will vary based on academic calendar.
