Developing skills in process optimization, staff management, communication, and adaptability enables the manager to lead high-performing teams and deliver quality products on schedule and within budget. Continuous learning and embracing technology further strengthen their capability to navigate the evolving industrial coatings environment effectively. A Shop Coatings Operations Manager oversees coating and painting operations, managing staff, production schedules, quality control, safety compliance, and supplies to ensure efficient, high-quality job completion on time and within budget. This individual will be responsible for not only execution but operational growth of the business outside of the internal coatings work required by PALA projects.


Essential Functions

  1. Manage daily coating/painting operations, ensuring projects meet deadlines and quality standards.
  2. Supervise and coordinate staff, including scheduling, training, evaluating performance, and enforcing safety protocols.
  3. Develop and implement production plans aligned with customer demands and company goals.
  4. Maintain and repair coating/painting equipment to ensure operational efficiency.
  5. Monitor inventory, including ordering paint, materials, and supplies while controlling costs.
  6. Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations related to coatings and painting processes.
  7. Conduct quality inspections of finished products to detect defects and ensure adherence to standards.
  8. Communicate with clients (internal and external), suppliers, and other departments to coordinate workflows, resolve issues, and maintain customer satisfaction.
  9. Manage budgeting, cost control, and reporting related to operations and labor. Responsible for the P&L of the operation. Participate in meetings such as project planning, safety briefings, quality control reviews, and client/vendor discussions.
  1. Experience: Several years in coating/painting operations or manufacturing, with supervisory or managerial experience preferred. Experience in business development a plus.
  2. Education: Degree in business, operations management, or a related technical field is a plus. Certifications like NACE or SSPC in coatings inspection are advantageous.
  3. Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in coating techniques, paint mixing, equipment operation, and quality control.
  4. Leadership: Strong team management, recruiting, training, and conflict resolution capabilities.
  5. Safety Expertise: Knowledge of OSHA standards and environmental regulations applicable to coating operations.
  6. Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, schedules, and resources effectively.
  7. Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication for coordinating with staff, clients, and suppliers.
