Description:

As a Senior Database Engineer with experience with structured and unstructured databases, you will be a pivotal member of our team, responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining efficient, scalable, and secure database systems in support of the U.S. Army’s energy and water use metering program. The total solution is considered a system-of-systems with developed applications integrating with the Army enterprise cloud and data environment. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance. 


You will also need familiarity with various open-source database platforms and technologies, such as Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, other NoSQL and cloud-based PaaS/SaaS data solutions e.g. AWS S3, Azure Data Lake. Experience with APIs and ETL/ELT are required with Data Fabric/Mesh a plus.


Responsibilities: 

Database Design and Implementation:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement robust database architectures
  • Optimize database performance, ensuring efficient data storage and retrieval
  • Manage both relational (SQL) and NoSQL databases

Data Security and Integrity:

  • Implement security measures to safeguard sensitive data
  • Monitor and maintain data integrity, ensuring compliance with industry standards
  • Develop strategies for data backup, recovery, and disaster planning

Performance Tuning and Optimization:

  • Analyze and optimize database performance, identifying bottlenecks and areas for improvement
  • Fine-tune SQL queries and indexing for efficient data retrieval
  • Work closely with software engineers to integrate databases with applications

Automation and Scalability:

  • Develop automation tools for routine database operations
  • Scale database systems to handle increasing data volumes
  • Stay updated on emerging database technologies and trends
  • Manage multi-node architectures that may expand into Data Fabric/Data Mesh designs

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Mentor junior database engineers
  • Provide thought leadership on database architectural design
  • Collaborate with system administrators and other IT professionals

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Database Engineer or DBA
  • 2-5 years experience working with DoD - Warfighter Experience a plus
  • 2-5 years experience with NoSQL databases and ELT/ETL data flows including metadata management
  • Nifi, Kafka, and Hadoop/Spark experience is a helpful requirement
  • Experience building APIs to front-end legacy data with an ELT data flow
  • Experience with ELK stack a plus
  • Geospatial Data Type Experience a plus
  • Experience with multi-data source mapping and architecture
  • Experience with hands on development of databases and integration with application development teams
  • Experience with security controls and variable data types, overlay compliance
  • Proficiency in SQL and experience with both relational and NoSQL databases
  • Familiarity with cloud-based database platforms (e.g., AWS RDS, Google Cloud SQL)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Active US Government Clearance at Secret level or higher
  • Effective written and verbal communications skills for collaboration with both customers and fellow team members.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to regularly lift at least 25 pounds.
  • Ability to commute to the designated onsite work location as required.
