Description

Maintain an assigned grounds area and athletic fields. In the absence of the Athletic Grounds Supervisor, supervise athletic fields maintenance employees, to include assign daily tasks to employees assigned to athletic fields maintenance; oversee projects progress to ensure proper completion. Provide hands-on training and direct supervision of athletic fields maintenance staff and student workers to ensure the proper maintenance of landscape equipment, athletic fields, intramural fields, turf, and other related areas. Provide technical assistance and update on issues to the Athletics Grounds Supervisor to establish decisions and needs related to athletic fields. Maintain records of chemical use and work performed, including mowing, seeding, fertilization, and aeration Calculate, and order seeds, fertilizer, and other materials required. Operate and repair computerized irrigation systems. Mix, apply, and document the application of chemicals for the Athletics Field Pest Control Program. Apply horticulture/agriculture chemicals to control disease and/or pests. Maintain athletic venues in accordance with American Physical Plant Association (APPA) Service Level Guidelines and NCAA regulations and guidelines.

Examples of Duties

Maintain turf grass and perform general athletic field maintenance, to include: - 30%

  • Cut turf grass to ensure proper heights on athletic fields, in compliance with NCAA regulations.
  • Cut grass to designated heights in surrounding areas and ditches
  • Implement cultural practices, to include: verticut, aerification, spike, and slice.
  • Seed/over seed, fertilize, and implement the pest control schedule.
  • Identify different types of turf grasses and potential turf diseases and make recommendations to resolve and/or avoid turf problems.
  • Maintaining a smooth and debris-free playing surface and surrounding areas.
  • Operate, repair, and/or perform maintenance on lawn maintenance equipment, to include walk behind mower, riding mowers of various types, push mower, string trimmer, edger, lawn sweeper, verticutter, and related equipment.

Supervise Athletics grounds employees, to include: - 25%
  • Supervise assigned grounds maintenance employees performing landscaping duties.
  • Provide hands-on training and direct supervision of grounds maintenance staff and student workers to ensure the proper maintenance of landscape equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures.
  • Evaluate disciplinary situations and recommend disciplinary action to the Supervisor and/or Manager.
  • Participate in the interview process for new hires and recommend new hires to the Athletics Grounds Supervisor, as requested. In the absence of Athletic Grounds Supervisor, supervise all Athletic grounds employees.
  • Snow removal team leader.
  • Direct employees and contractors through snow removal plan

Apply athletic field marking paint and marble dust to athletic and intramural fields, to include: - 20%
  • Layout athletic fields and intramural fields for specific markings, in compliance with NCAA regulations.
  • Mix field marking paint at specified percentages to ensure proper visibility of lines.
  • Apply athletic field marking paint and marble dust to athletic and intramural fields, in compliance with NCAA regulations.
  • Assist the Applicator Technician in maintaining an inventory and record of chemicals and chemical applications.
  • Assist the Applicator Technician in maintaining the spray equipment.

Install, repair, and perform general maintenance of irrigation systems, to include: - 20%
  • Install and repair irrigation systems, to include replacement of lines, swing joints, heads and nozzles.
  • Identify irrigation deficiencies perform repairs, as necessary.
  • Determine watering schedules by programming the computer to meet specific watering schedules.

Typical Qualifications

Education:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • A minimum of 20 credit hours in horticulture-related courses preferred.
  • Education may be substituted for experience or experience may be substituted for education based on the following: AA = 2 years experience; BA/BS = 4 years experience; MA/MS = 6 years experience.

Experience:
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in Landscape Maintenance, to include: six months experience in horticultural-related pesticide application.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.


Licenses and Certifications:
  • Missouri Certified Pesticide Applicators License Proffered


Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Student Employees, including Graduate Assistants 3-5
  • Regular Part-Time or Full-Time Employees 6-10
  • Temporary and/or Seasonal Employees 4-6


Working Hours and Days:
Monday - Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm, Overtime and weekends available

Supplemental Information

Special Skills/Abilities/Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of laws governing the safe use of pest control products, including the State Pesticide Use Act.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply NCAA provisions for proper field markings.
  • Ability to mix paints to ensure the brightness of lines.
  • Working knowledge of fertilizer and formulations.


Physical/Environmental Factors:
  • Lifting (Weight) - 50lbs
  • Exposure to Horticultural/Agricultural Chemicals
Special Working Qualifications:
  • Must obtain Missouri Certified Pesticide Applicators License within 6 months
