Essential Job Functions:  

This position provides efficient and effective customer service to customers and agencies in all areas of the District Court of Maryland. It is the responsibility of the Judiciary Clerk to accurately answer inquiries, enter data, and process documents, primarily relating to the criminal/traffic department

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Thoroughly and accurately process a wide variety of tasks including, but not limited to, postponements; consolidations; modifications; appeals; parking violations; bench warrants; failure to pay, show cause/ bench warrant, preliminary hearing requests, speedy trial requests; jury trial requests; daily mail; waiver/trial requests; Parole and Probation actions/reports; and writ lists through the electronic case management system

Operate computer/fax/printer and phones during all phases of criminal/traffic processes and procedures. Respond to customer inquiries about cases and assign cases to courtrooms.

Provide customer service by phone and at criminal/traffic information desk by accurately answering inquiries and providing information. Work on a rotating basis at the information desk as assigned by a supervisor.

Back scan files and link documents. Process filings such as pending requests/motions, judicial rulings, and disseminate appropriately.

Schedule trial and hearings for criminal/traffic cases by checking officer availability dates/schedules and judicial availability.

Maintain statistics as required; work criminal/traffic reports; work with case-flow requirements and assessments.

Perform other specialized duties as assigned by supervisor, Administrative Clerk or Judge.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience:

One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

Note:

A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

General office practices, procedures, and equipment.

Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.

Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Judiciary Human resources policies and procedures.

Skill in:

Typing on a personal computer.

Accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability to:

Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, register, scanner, fax machine, etc.

Use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems.

Make independent decisions to prioritize work assignments.

Establish and maintain working relationships.

Communicate clearly, tactfully and effectively with judges, law enforcement, attorneys, court officials, supervisors and the public, both verbally and in writing.

Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.

Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.

Work within various time constraints.

Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.

Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling,

Use electronic case management system.

Exercise independent judgement in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.

Physical Requirements:

Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Equipment, Machinery and Tools:

Personal computer to update and access case management system and perform data entry.

Printer/Copier to print paperwork and copy documents.

Fax machine to fax documents to necessary agencies.

Batch and desktop scanner to scan documents to cases.

Multi-Line telephone system to answer, transfer, and make phone calls as necessary to answer questions and obtain information for the Court.

Software and Computer Skills:

Microsoft: Office, Outlook

MDEC: Odyssey, File and Serve, Officer Portal, Calendar

Chrome/Edge: Judiciary Case Search, CourtNet (internet and intranet), Connect, Workday.
