Department Overview

The purpose of this position is to provide technical support services to licensed pharmacists at the OHSU East

Portland Pharmacy, who are responsible for the safe and proper distribution of medications to a diverse patient

population. The pharmacy technician will also assist in inventory management, third party plan processing,

and providing excellent customer service.

Function/Duties of Position
  • Prepares outpatient prescriptions: enters prescription and billing information into pharmacy system, retrieves and receives refill authorizations for prescriptions, processes refill requests via EHR. 

     

  • Assists pharmacist in technical support activities such as answering telephone calls, medication profile maintenance, paperwork, and record keeping as assigned. 

     

  • Actively engages in inventory control, checks stock for outdates, and orders supplies for pharmacy and clinic from appropriate sources. 

     

  • Interacts with other health care team members

     

  • Perform other technician duties as assigned


Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma,

  • Active State of Oregon Pharmacy Technician License, including the completion and maintenance of job-specific competencies and certifications.

     

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Must possess computer keyboarding skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication
  • Knowledge base of insurance processing
  • Knowledge of managed care environment.
  • Successfully completes initial and continued competencies as required for maintenance of standard of practice, legal regulatory compliance and OHSU policies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Formal pharmacy technician training program
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician License
  • Inpatient and outpatient hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Medical and scientific nomenclature.

Additional Details

The pharmacy technician will experience competing demands on their time from patients and/or clinic staff

and will need to effectively multitask. The pharmacy technician will be accountable for accuracy associated

with performance of the duties of this position. This pharmacy serves a largely indigent patient population

making a non-judgmental and compassionate demeanor preferable. Must be able to deliver a consistently

high level of customer service. Possible exposure to hazardous chemicals and noise. Flexibility in scheduling

of shift times.
