What You Will Do

The Biological Sciences Lab Manager will work as part of a team that includes the Office Manager and the Department Chair to provide logistical support to all members of the department (students, instructors and faculty). The Biological Sciences Lab Manager will manage all aspects of the greenhouse while also training and managing Teaching Assistants and student workers associated with the bacteriology (~300 students/year) and microbiology (~100 students/year) lab.

The Lab Manager has duties in training in the proper use of common equipment and safety procedures, management of facilities, maintaining equipment and chemical inventories and materials acquisition.

Proper execution of Lab Manager duties benefits all members of the Department, including students, instructors and faculty.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline closely related to the position
AND
two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in a laboratory or similar setting closely related to the position
OR
Total of five (5) years (60 months) of any combination of education in a scientific discipline and/or work experience in a laboratory or similar setting related to the position.
One (1) year (12 months) of supervisory and/or administrative experience.

Experience with standard laboratory procedures and equipment maintenance. Ability to train and supervise students, staff, or volunteers in safe and effective laboratory and greenhouse practices. Strong organizational and communication skills. Knowledge of workplace safety standards and compliance (OSHA, chemical handling, etc.). Training and/or experience in microbiology with broad knowledge of techniques and procedures as well as media and reagent preparation.

Preferred qualifications: A master's degree in appropriate field. Two or more years of experience managing greenhouse facilities in an academic or research setting. Experience in experimental design support and maintaining diverse plant collections. Familiarity with integrated pest management (IPM) and automated greenhouse systems. Experience coordinating with faculty on research and teaching needs. Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, order supplies, and maintain inventories. Experience developing and enforcing laboratory/greenhouse safety protocols. Strong record of mentoring students or staff in research or teaching labs.
