The Space Biomedicine Program at the University of Pittsburgh is at the forefront of integrating space biology with advanced biomedical research. Its mission is to develop innovative technologies to safeguard human health and optimize performance in space, while also translating the knowledge gained from space research into solutions for terrestrial healthcare. In addition to its research focus, the program has a second mission: to promote education and outreach in space biomedicine. It aims to establish a robust educational environment that not only supports the University of Pittsburgh but also engages domestic and global partners, preparing the next generation of space researchers and advancing knowledge in this critical field.

This program will feature an innovative and interdisciplinary doctoral program designed specifically to train the next generation of researchers capable of pioneering new frontiers in astronaut precision medicine.

Qualified candidates must have a background in mammalian/human biology through high altitude and zero gravity space and synthetic approaches. The engineering of cell-cell interactions and of cellular signaling pathways will be based on a strong foundation of basic biomedical, biology, and chemistry expertise is critical in order to be able to lead and develop new therapeutic and diagnostic approaches. The understanding, prediction, and reprogramming of pathways and cell interactions will require chemical, physical, and computational tools, and the modeling of synthetic biology designs will reduce experimental trial-and-error. A concomitant background in DNA synthesis and AI modeling will allow the incumbent to develop through high-throughput approaches. The institute will also emphasize a shift to "systems", where cells are designed to work together and be integrated with traditional materials or electronics, thus experience in such protocols is preferred.
