Faculty in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Central Missouri support the University's mission of providing a high-quality education and are committed to the success of their students.
Examples of Duties
The primary responsibilities of this position are to (i) serve as the Director of the First-year Composition program, and (ii) provide instruction in the Department's courses, focusing on classes in Composition as well as general education courses in literature and courses in the candidate's areas of interest. The annual course load is 3/3, including one course release per term for work as Director of Composition.
As Director of First-Year Composition, the faculty member will provide leadership for the University's Composition program and vision for the program as an engine for student success. The Director of Composition provides instructional support for faculty teaching in the program; creates training and pedagogical materials; uses data and analysis to track student success, inform and enhance the curriculum, and improve student outcomes; maintains and revises the custom textbook; trains and supervises the department's graduate teaching instructors (GAs); serves on or leads University and DOE committees related to the Composition program; assists in workshops for Dual Credit teachers; oversees the general education recertification for Composition classes; and assists the chair with staffing and scheduling.
Teaching in the Department's programs entails diligent course preparation, effective course design and delivery of instruction, being available to meet students outside the classroom during office hours and tutorials, and timely and fair evaluation and feedback of student progress. Expectations also include remaining current in the discipline; facilitating student engagement through the use of high-impact practices; taking part in ongoing assessments of the curriculum and student learning; and participating in professional development opportunities, including training in instructional technology.
The person who fills this position will be expected to comply with all departmental, college, and University policies while contributing to cultivating a collegial atmosphere among the University faculty and staff.
Typical Qualifications
A PhD in English or a related field is required; candidates with an ABD may be considered. The ideal candidate will have experience with writing program administration or curricular leadership, evidence of a scholarly agenda in composition studies and English (such as Pre-Victorian British literature, Postcolonial literature, or subfields of American literature, e.g., Asian American and Latino/a literature), and strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
