Position will support the Space Launch Systems program at the Michoud facility, recommending engineering and manufacturing actions for attainment of design objectives of process or product by applying knowledge of material science and related technologies. Will reviews plans for New products and factors, such as strength, weight, and cost to submit material selection recommendations ensuring attainment of design objectives. Plans and implements laboratory operations to develop material and fabrication procedures for New materials to fulfill product cost and performance standards. Confers with producers of materials, such as metals, ceramics, and polymers, during investigation and evaluation of materials suitable for specific product applications.
Bachelors degree from an accredited college in a related discipline, or equivalent experience/combined education, with 9 years of professional experience; or 7 years of professional experience with a related Masters degree, or two years with a PhD. Considered an emerging authority.
Bachelors degree from an accredited college in Physics, Material Sciences and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering related background or field of study. Good written and verbal skills. Motivated individual who is willing to work closely as part of a diverse team and work to resolve technical differences. Demonstrated knowledge and application of Materials and Processes for development, design, application and production. Background in fusion or friction stir welding.
Experience with aerospace materials and processes. Ability to multi-task, handle shifting priorities and timeline pressure to meet project deadlines. Familiar with a variety of materials and process engineering disciplines including metals, composites, adhesives, bonding, cleaning, failure analysis, and manufacturing operations. Understanding of material properties definitions is highly desired. Must be able to work with well virtually with other sites. Experience developing and certifying weld schedules and/or weld procedures. Familiarity with semi-automatic or robotic weld tools. Hands-on manufacturing experience
