Description: Lockheed Martin Energy Storage is commercializing a new class of grid-scale energy storage systems. This is a full-time, design-oriented engineering position to lead the development of a new flow battery technology from concept through commercialization. This new flow battery will be used to enable the widespread deployment of renewable energy. This position is located in Cambridge, MA.
The mechanical engineer (ME) will lead the design, analysis, testing, and refinement of mechanical systems and sub-systems for a novel flow battery system. The ME will provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers, drafters, and technicians. The ME will use analysis ranging from hand calculations to FEA/CFD to qualify their designs. The ME will collaborate with test engineers to resolve failures and deploy corrective actions that improve the cost, durability, and performance trajectory of this new technology. The ME will employ design for manufacturing and assembly principles (DFMA) and provide manufacturing support to the ramp up of production components that they design. The ability to communicate effectively with scientists and engineers, as well as non-technical stake-holders is expected.
The ideal candidate will also have familiarity with electrochemical systems, such as fuel cells, batteries (esp. flow), or electrolyzers. Experience leading teams in the design and scale up of electrochemical cell-stacks is highly valued.

Cambridge is just across the river from Boston and is located in eastern Massachusetts. Cambridge is home to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University. Cambridge, is also the birthplace of many startup companies due to the high amount of brain power produced by these schools and also from nearby Tufts University, Boston College, Boston University, Brandies University, Wellesley College, Babson College, and Northeastern University. Nearby communities would include scenic coastal towns such as Swampscott, Salem, and Marblehead. To the west are communities such as Belmont, Brookline, Watertown, Waltham, Lincoln, and Concord. Our Lockheed Martin AES site is located somewhat close to the Alewife Station which is a major MBTA transit hub with access to the Red Line with service to Boston and bus lines with service to surrounding neighborhoods and adjacent communities. If you like living in right in the city, or out in the suburbs, or near the ocean, our location will offer ample choices for you. Where can you get to from Cambridge and Boston? Cape Cod is less than 90 minutes to the southeast. The White Mountains of New Hampshire are 2.5 hours to the north. Providence, RI is about 2 hours to the southwest. Montreal is about 5 hours to the northwest.
Desired Skills: ? An advanced technical degree is preferred.
? Experience with electrochemical systems such as batteries, fuels cells, or electrolyzers is highly valued, and experience designing electrochemical cell-stacks is valued above all else.
? Solid modeling experience (any CAD package, Solidworks preferred)
? Finite element modeling experience (any software, COMSOL preferred)
? Expertise with the design of fluid systems.
? Experience designing equipment to regulatory codes and standards (ex. NFPA, NEC, NEMA, ,UL, ASME)
Basic Qualifications: ? A BS in mechanical engineering or related field is required.
? Product development experience is required.
? Solid modeling experience is required.
? Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T drawing standards
? An inherent knowledge of design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA) principles
