This position will be responsible for the timely delivery of early-stage engineering to define the scope for transmission and distribution substation projects that result in innovative, effective and efficient systems for National Grid.
Develop early stage engineering scopes that are feasible, fit for purpose, innovative, cost-effective and timely to satisfy needs cases produced by Asset Management, Business Development and other stakeholders.
Lead early stage scoping efforts for electrical projects. Occasionally lead early stage scoping efforts for non-electrical projects.
Work with Asset Management and other stakeholders to support the functional development of needs cases.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues that may arise in early stage engineering.
Participate in asset condition assessments.
Promote a strong team atmosphere.
Fully embrace safe working practices.
Be a change agent for newly developed engineering, asset management and capital delivery initiatives.
Apply process improvement techniques and practices to lead continuous improvement and foster excellence in early-stage project engineering.
Manage consultants’ work ensuring technical adequacy complying with National Grid standards.
Support Operations during emergencies as required. Be prepared to execute emergency roles as assigned.
May act in a lead role for project/work assignment by providing guidance and/or direction to junior level engineers.
Knowledge & Experience Requirements:
A bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical or Power Engineering preferred) from an ABET accredited engineering school with knowledge of the electric aspects of electric power systems.
Valid driver’s license.
Mobility in and around electric facilities.
Ability to lead/manage several projects at one time.
Troubleshooting/problem solving skills.
Ability to formulate decisions with little supervisory input and exhibit sound judgment.
Computer skills (analysis, special studies).
Good understanding of electric power systems, which includes knowledge of power system equipment application and performance, understands the principals involved in electric power system design and construction and operational use of electric facilities.
Demonstrate a high level of personal initiative and ability to interact and communicate (written and oral) with all stakeholders in a positive, team building manner.
Proficient with ANSI, NESC, IEEE, NEC standards that apply to design, operation and maintenance.
Demonstrate the ability to lead change and continuous improvement as well as learn new engineering skills.
Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
