Basic Qualifications
Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent (strong preference for degree in a technical field equivalent military or government service) and a minimum of 15 years related industry and/or government experience. Requires strong leadership and communication skills and an ability to rapidly grasp advanced technologies and how they may be applied to satisfying customer requirements. An ability to work both independently and within highly motivated teams is required. Experience in business development, systems engineering, and in understanding government contracting procedures is strongly desired. Experience with Surface Navy customer is required.
Department of Defense Secret security clearance is required at time of hire. The individual selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.
Responsibilities for this Position
General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS), a market leader and technology innovator, is seeking talented professionals to deliver cutting edge solutions to our customers.
GDMS has an immediate opening for a Business Development Director in Fairfax, VA supporting our Surface Ship Integration and Support business area. The position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense services and systems. GDMS employees work closely with customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out critical national security missions supporting intelligence collection, processing and dissemination.
The selected candidate will work with collaborative teams to identify and help acquire new business ventures for GDMS and its customers. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:
Act as the business development lead responsible for developing strategic plans and supporting business captures to grow our market share within the surface ship systems integration market. The candidate will work with customers and industry partners, and draws upon the broader capabilities of GDMS to be successful. Knowledge of U.S. Navy Surface Ships, Naval combat systems integration, shipyard processes, shipboard RF spectrum sensors and systems, and Navy customer strategies in the surface ship market are strongly preferred.
The candidate will work in partnership with the Maritime and Strategic Systems (M&SS) VP of Strategy & Business Development and the Surface Ship Systems Vice President, and will be responsible to develop strategy and support specific captures in accordance with the GDMS Business Development process. The candidate should demonstrate extensive experience in having defined and executed successful strategies to grow business.
Proven operational and/or business experience with Navy surface ship combat systems and the US Navy Surface Warfare Officer community, including PEO Littoral Combat Ships, PEO Ships, PEO Integrated Warfare Systems (IWS), OPNAV, and the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) is preferred. Technical background is preferred to ensure technical decisions can be vetted to ensure optimal solutions are presented to potential customers. This job is both strategic and tactical, and requires substantial leadership in opportunity capture and business strategy and vision as well as an ability to work independently.
Advises the Maritime and Strategic Systems Business Development VP and Surface Ship Systems Vice President on growth strategies, marketing, and management of resources for future program procurements.
Identifies and recommends new business opportunities.
Formulates strategies and plans to acquire new business.
Develops and monitors profitability, productivity and growth targets
Develops and administers schedules, performance requirements; responsible for budgets
Responsible for developing assigned staff, including performance evaluations and pay increase recommendations
Assists in the development of short and long-range business forecasts and marketing plans.
Performs administrative, analytical, and research activities in support of the business development and acquisition, strategic planning, proposal development and/or marketing services functions.
Gathers data on competitors and analyzes their prices, sales and methods of operation.
Analyzes and researches customer information, product/service preferences, market size, penetration, marketing practices and trends.
Identifies and wins new business to meet the established business growth goals.
Exercises creative thinking and ideation to advance our business performance.
Delivers innovative, flexible, integrated solutions to meet customers’ changing business needs.
Follows industry trends and pursue technology innovation to ensure GDMS’ services are cost competitive and superior to industry best practices.

Directs the activities of a functional area or project for a business area or line of business

Performance metrics visible at the GDMS, business or functional level
Erroneous decisions will have a serious impact on the overall success of functional, division, or company operations
Directs and controls the activities of a broad functional area through several department managers within the company
Has overall control of planning, staffing, budgeting, managing expense priorities, and recommending and implementing changes to methods
Responsible for managing people, including performance evaluations and pay increase recommendations
Responsible for hire/fire decisions
