The Medical Surveillance Monthly Report (MSMR), a peer-reviewed journal launched in 1995, is the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch's flagship publication. The MSMR provides monthly evidence-based estimates of the incidence, prevalence, distribution, impact, and trends of health-related conditions in service members and military associated populations. Modeled after the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), the MSMR is a primary vehicle for disseminating medical surveillance information of broad interest throughout the DoD.

 

Serves as managing editor for the MSMR and coordinates editorial processes to include the following:

 

Coordination of external submissions to the MSMR; correspondence with manuscript authors, verification of appropriate clearances prior to publication

 

Coordination of the internal and external review process for all MSMR manuscripts;  to correspondence with reviewers; preparation of reviews for manuscript authors and receipt of author responses and revision

 

Proofing and editing of all MSMR manuscripts prior to publication

 

Oversight of MSMR layout and coordination with graphic artist

 

Ensures MSMR documents meet editorial and customer specifications and adhere to standards for quality, graphics, format, and style.

 

Interfaces with authors, MSMR editorial staff, external authors, and subject matter experts in coordinating/preparing the manuscripts for publication

 

Maintain editorial and publication calendar and ensure that manuscript and MSMR deadlines are met

 

In consultation with contributing editors and editor-in-chief, develop topics for possible MSMR manuscripts. Tasks associated with this may include literature review, development of analysis plans, and drafting initial manuscript.

Qualifications:

5-8 years of related experience preparing and editing technical documentation.

 

3 years of related experience in public health, health communication, or similar

 

Must be able to communicate and coordinate effectively in a multidisciplinary team

 

Must be able to meet recurring and frequent deadlines and manage publication timelines.

 

Experience in writing or editing manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed medical journals preferred.

 

Experience in medical surveillance preferred

Education:

Bachelors Degree in English, Journalism or a related discipline.

Master’s degree preferred in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics or similar
