LAN Technician II- job opportunity for a Local Area Network Technician at the NASA Langley Research Center. Scope of Position Primary responsibilities include the installation, troubleshooting, and management of the network infrastructure for a large campus. The position includes resolution of complex problems on a live network and familiarity with sophisticated network monitoring and management tools and diagnostic test equipment.

Job Duties

Duties include the update and management of network cable management systems (Patch Manager), service record documentation (Remedy ITSM), supporting end users on a daily basis, as well as troubleshooting and resolution of customer’s network issues. The candidate will be expected to work with local and remote network engineering staff in the installation or replacement of network infrastructure components including routers, switches, and wireless access points. The job will be for a full time, overtime eligible employee paid on an hourly basis.

Follow processes and provide advance notification of all planned system and network outages within a strong change management environment

Create clear and concise documentation of both problems and resolutions

Quick response to network alarms and possible service outages

Be comfortable and willing to perform hands-on troubleshooting and field work

Perform installation and removal of network infrastructure and wiring

Provide on-call support, after hours, and occasional weekend work as required



Minimum of an AA degree in related discipline or relevant certifications and 2 years of field related work experience. Additional years of related experience is acceptable in place of the degree.

Experience with Cisco Network hardware is a must

Working knowledge of routing and switching

Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to narrow down the cause of an issue and determine a solution

Ability to maintain accurate logs of trouble isolation and repair efforts and escalate issues to Network Engineers and/or management as needed

Ability to lift and move network hardware devices up to 45 pounds, and the ability to climb a ladder and work safely at heights while operating with power tools

Independent thinking/problem solving skills and ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks with appropriate supervision

A professional attitude and courteous manner toward customers, partners, and coworkers is essential

Must be a U.S. citizen with ability to pass a Government background investigation


Experience working in cooperation with Network Operations Center (NOC) personnel

Experience working as an interface to vendors, including Cisco TAC and Aruba in dealing with infrastructure support issues

Experience with VoIP is a plus

Network+, CCNA, or other industry recognized certifications is a plus
