Description:The Optical Payload Center of Excellence (OPCOE) for Lockheed Martin Space pursues, develops, designs, and delivers optical payloads for air, ground, and space, for customers in commercial, defense, and civil markets. OPCoE reports within the LM-Space central Engineering and Technology organization and is tasked with providing optical payload technology support to the enterprise lines of business (LOBs). Responsibilities of the organization span the program life cycle, from technology development through business capture, and into program execution. In this capacity, OPCoE furthers LOB growth objectives by defining and executing IRAD programs to develop discriminators for future procurements, develops full EO payload solutions and supports LOB proposal efforts, acts as an agent for LOB procurement of EO payload technologies/solutions when needed, and provides program management and engineering staff for execution of EO programs and program elements.
The Lockheed Martin’s Optical Payloads Center of Excellence (OPCoE) is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our team located in Sunnyvale, CA, Littleton, CO, and Louisville, CO. OPCoE delivers innovative active, passive and high energy optical systems for defense, aerospace, industrial, and scientific markets. We have been part of our nation’s most ambitious missions including the Hubble Space Telescope, James Webb Space Telescope, and Airborne Laser, Space Based Infrared System, and many others. Due to the variety of the work products, the candidate will need a flexible and adaptable skill set, with a strong desire for learning. This position will perform engineering design and drafting roles, so the candidate will need an innovative developmental mindset and engineering skills with experience in 3D modeling and mechanical design. Knowledge of opto-mechanical and/or precision engineering is preferred. The role will include developing concepts using 3D CAD modeling software, holding design reviews, developing and releasing engineering drawings, and supporting change activities. Must be familiar with basic mechanical analysis, tolerances and manufacturing methods. A successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, the ability to multi-task, good organizational skills, extremely strong computer literacy, and a demonstrated ability to thrive in a team environment.
PhD in mechanical engineering, optical engineering or related field and 5 years of professional experience, MS with 10 years of experience, or BS with 15 years of experience.
Experience with optical/opto-mechanical design including lens cells, mirror mounts, filter wheels, and steering mirrors.
Experience with precision engineering including kinematic interfaces, flexures, and metrology
Experience with CAD as tool for layout, concept definition, design, and drafting of mechanical hardware
Proven ability to create conceptual designs based on a preliminary optical ray trace
Knowledge and understanding on how to apply ASME Y14.5 / GD&T
Knowledge of manufacturing processes and documentation including machining, fabrication and assembly
Demonstrated knowledge of other disciplines including stress, dynamics, thermal analysis, production, electronics, systems engineering, etc.
Ability to work within multidisciplinary product development teams
Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
Hands-on mechanical hardware manufacturing, test or assembly experience
Able to obtain and maintain government security
Proficient with CAD modeling, drafting and release in CREO/EPDM
Experience with Abaqus, ANSYS, Nastran, Sigfit, Zemax, or Code V
Experience working with procurement, suppliers, manufacturing and integration organizations
Familiarity with Lockheed Martin specifications/tools/procedures
Experience with test methods, planning and execution
Experience with space-suitable materials and processes
Experience with the design of optical systems which have flown in air and/or space
Demonstrated working knowledge of design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA)
Knowledge of additive manufacturing techniques and familiarity with additive mfg design
