Sr. Design Checking Engineer II

Job Description:
This position is the Section Manager for Design and Checking and is responsible for leading a group of designers, checkers and drafters reporting to the Engineering Department in Albuquerque. This position also serves as a Senior Design Checking Engineer on Directed Energy or Mobile Range programs. The Senior Design Checking Engineer is responsible for checking functions for mechanical and electrical engineering drawings and specifications. The engineer will be required to review engineering drawings and related documents for simplicity and efficiency in design; completeness, clarity and dimensional accuracy; correctness of materials and properties; conformity to design/drafting standards, design specification; and economy of fabrication and assembly. The engineer must also create improvements of processes, systems or products to influence new designs for producibility and establish strong communication lines between multi-cross functional teams effectively.

The Design and Checking Section Manager is responsible for overseeing the work products of designers, checkers and drafters supporting concept, detailed design, and hardware builds of Directed Energy and Mobile Range products. The Design and Checking team works closely with mechanical engineering and manufacturing engineering, and is expected to support the engineering development team from conceptual design phases through preliminary and critical design, build, test and delivery of hardware.
Required Skills:

  • Experience with SolidWorks
  • Experience in detailed design with knowledge of production
  • Thorough understanding and application of principles, practices and standards for creation and preparation of engineering design documentation
  • Comprehensive knowledge of industry practices and standards and ability to identify and correct design, drawing errors/omissions/deficiencies and recommend corrective actions or improvements
  • Familiarity with the application of documentation specifications such as MIL-DTL-31000, ASME Y14.24 and ASME Y14.100 related to design and preparation of technical data packages
  • Technical knowledge sufficient to perform complex tasks such as preparation of tabulated details, large assemblies, castings and other preforms, interface control drawings, modification and retrofit installation drawings and various layouts for design concepts
  • Must have the ability to apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing form controls in accordance with ASME or ANSI Y14.5M.

  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Desired Skills:
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks Product Data Management system (PDM Works or PDM PRO)
  • Familiarity with Industry Standard Specifications (NAS, MIL, MS, etc.)
  • Design for Manufacturing (DFM) experience
  • Experience with Altium Designer and Creo
  • Experience using documentation specifications such as MIL-DTL-31000, ASME Y14.24 and ASME Y14.100
  • Knowledge of Raytheon Drafting Standard, Mechanical Engineering Process for documentation checking
  • Background in manufacturing methods/processes and assembly fixtures and gages design
  • Existing Secret clearance
Required Education (including Major):
  • Requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)
  • Minimum of 6 years of prior relevant experience
Clearance:
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense SECRET clearance; existing clearance preferred
  • U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date
