Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree.
Department of Defense Secret security clearance must be obtainable within 24 months of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.
Responsibilities for this Position
General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Senior Mechanical Engineer. This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems. General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.
The Senior Mechanical Engineer 1 is primarily responsible for assuring the overall quality of each design model and drawing released through configuration management. The candidate must be able to apply the latest drafting and CAD standards and processes while working to develop best practices for modeling and drafting techniques within the design group. The will participate in the development of such standards and practices to meet or exceed industry standards for the above including 3D Model Based Definition.
As a minimum, review and determine the quality of released models and drawings by the following:
All model, drawing and interference checks against established standards and checklists have been completed
Preferred drawing formats, materials, processes, notes and note precedence are to internal standards have been applied
Appropriate geometric dimensioning and tolerancing has been applied IAW industry practices
Appropriate tolerance analysis have been completed and documented in support of future reviews
Maintain and develop modeling and detailing standards as needed based on current industry and vendor needs
Provide technical support, clarification and interpretation of task, code and standards requirements for all discipline design and drafting activities.
Assist with implementation and training of Model Based Definition within the design group
Assist in configuration management of models and drawings entering and leaving implemented PDM software.
Assist with small scale design tasks including modeling and development of sketches as necessary
Assist in the evaluation and appraisal of modelers and their adherence to best practices
Assist with Design for Manufacture efforts and implementation for new design projects
Performs design and development in such areas as mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, thermodynamic, or heat transfer for production, transmission, measurement, and use of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines and/or machines
Leads development of strategic tasks or small projects by applying engineering and organizational knowledge and expertise to achieve technical goals
Understands and interprets the technical, organizational and process aspects of the task assigned and can relate them to the technical needs of the overall project or organization
Plans and executes small projects or task elements within larger projects, organizations, or for groups of projects
Responsible for the completion of assigned engineering tasks or small projects within budgetary and scheduling guidelines
Actively uncovers technical and organizational risks and ensures they are included in risk mitigation plans
Participates in development of program strategies and teaming strategies as they relate to the assigned task
Begins participating in the proposal process
Conducts feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs
Directs support personnel in the preparation of detailed design, design testing and prototype fabrication
Begins participating in the proposal process
Carries out other tasks, not listed, assigned by supervisor
Travel may be required

•Experience with Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems is preferred
ASME GD&T certification, technologist level followed by senior level
Demonstrated strong customer (internal and external) focus.
Considerable proficiency and able to perform all responsibilities associated with the position
•Grasps and applies new information quickly
•Considerable ability to handle more complex assignments
•Must be proficient with considerable modeling CAD tools to create mechanical models and accompanying drawings
•Shows initiative on assignments, exercises independent judgment and professionally executes projects with little direction
•Considerable knowledge with technical standards, manufacturing/fabrication methods, government/industry standards
•Prefer knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools
Highly-motivated, independent, organized, detail-oriented, and strong interpersonal skills

PREFERRED DEGREE TYPES AND EXPERIENCE: AS degree with 5 or more years of relevant experience, BSME with 2 or more years of relevant experience, or MSME with relevant experience
