Basic Qualifications
Associate's degree is required or equivalent, plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
Experience with technical equipment and hands on lab work
Familiarity with electrical and optical components
Prior experience with microfabrication preferred
Prior experience with fiber optics preferred
Experience with instrument I/O and computer interfacing preferred (LabView, etc)

Responsibilities for this Position
General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Optical Prototype Assembly Technician. This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems. General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:
Performs research and engineering laboratory functions involving the layout, building, testing, troubleshooting, repairing and modification of optical, electronic or electro-optical devices, assemblies, subsystems, and systems
Assists with assembly, process troubleshooting, and evaluation of prototype electro-optic devices currently under development. Will be trained in using specialized tools for building and testing devices
Interface with microfabrication equipment to build microphotonic or microelectronic devices including lithography, thin film deposition, etching processes and microscopy
Interface with electrical and optical processing equipment including polishing, fiber splicing, soldering
Interface with small mechanical parts requiring sensitive alignment and tight mechanical tolerances
Assemble/modify small precision components requiring the use of a variable zoom microscope
Interface with electrical and optical test equipment including oscilloscopes, multi-meters, optical sources detectors, and various types of high-end metrology equipment
Make suggestions in process improvements, assist with finding and ordering parts and equipment
Tests and inspects optical components using a variety of metrology, test, and inspection equipment
Interprets complex engineering drawings, diagrams and schematics, and understand the necessary interfaces
Performs and oversees complex system level troubleshooting to component level
Provides key field feedback in development of revised product and programs
After appropriate training, the successful applicant will be expected to work with little day to day supervision to accomplish assigned task
This position requires a low level of specialization but requires the ability and eagerness to learn and implement new skills. Work may involve travel to other GD locations or partner facilities in or out of state.
