A software engineer (SE) serves as the key implementer of machine intelligence (MI) algorithms that incorporate the following key SE skillsets: hard science domain expertise, machine learning (ML) algorithm implementation, signal processing, database programming, software architecture, and software development. Using domain expertise, a SE will work closely with data scientist (DS) staff to implement data aggregation, normalization, feature generation, feature selection, feature introspection, feature visualization, pattern classification algorithms, and prediction algorithms. A successful SE will apply their hard science background to suggest refinements to features and algorithm selection and configuration collaboratively with data science and data engineer staff.

A strong sense of urgency, empathy, self-driven learning, and life balance are key to doing well in this role.

Required: Master of Science (MS) in a hard science degree (i.e. engineering, physics, or math) with 9 years' experience demonstrating at least 5 of the key software engineering skillsets including ML algorithm implementation, signal processing, database programming, software architecture, and software development. Software skills must include C++ programming; database structured query language (SQL); Matlab, Octave, or R; plus scripting language in Python, Scala, PowerShell, or Bash experience. Must be capable of securing a government security clearance.

Preferred: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in a hard science degree with 7 years' experience all 6 of the SE skillsets. Software skills in C# or Java, hybrid cloud, service-oriented architecture (SOA), C# object relational model (ORM), or high-performance computing (HPC) programming. Has an active department of defense clearance.

This is an IEEE grade 7 equivalent role that makes decisions and recommendations that are recognized as authoritative and have an important impact on extensive engineering activities. Initiates and maintains extensive contact with key engineers and officials of other organizations and companies, requiring skill in persuasion and negotiation of critical issues. Individuals must demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature engineering judgment in anticipating and solving unprecedented engineering problems, program objectives and requirements, organizing programs, and developing standards and guides for diverse engineering activities. Receives general administrative direction. Directs several subordinate supervisors or team leaders. As individual researcher and consultant, may be assisted on individual projects by other engineers and technicians.
