Principal BI Developer
Position Description/Job Responsibilities:
Principal BI Developer is responsible for leading a global BI team.
Functions as architect, technical lead and acts as liaison between IT groups.
Provide training and direction to the BI team members. Monitor work queues; assign, prioritize and coordinate activities of the BI team. Proactively provides status reports to management and seeks prioritization as needed.
Work closely with business users and internal IT teams to determine functional and technical requirements.
Develop task lists, project plans and estimates based on functional and technical requirements.
Participate in every aspect of the BI development lifecycle which includes hands-on development.
Establishes and communicates common goals and direction for the team.
Ensures system changes are successfully implemented within agreed schedules and costs in compliance with corporate and IT goals and standards and monitored to increase efficiency. Manage activities between users, IT development staff and third party consultants and contractors, while keeping management informed of progress, benefits, achievements and risks.
Provide strategic and technical direction and input for solutions that are consistent with IT strategic direction and processes.
Provide after-hours support as required.

Responsible for managing the daily activities of the BI team.
Manages BI team including resource planning, vacation and on-call scheduling to ensure constant, round-the-clock availability of skilled resources to support the user community.
Conducts performance reviews.
Makes recommendations for hiring new personnel and initiates disciplinary actions as necessary.
Ensures that the skill sets of the team members remain current and consistent with the needs of the team.
Assists in preparation of departmental budget and forecasts as relates to the business process analyst team and monitors expenses to ensure the department stays within the authorized expenditure limits.
Interviews and has input into candidate selection for open positions and conducts disciplinary actions as necessary.
Works with functional / business customers to prioritize and proactively manage the BI portfolio demand and projects.
Works with business counterparts to define the annual and periodic support plans
Monitors the development, testing, and production environments taking such action as may be necessary to ensure maximum availability and correct operation of responsible applications.
Directs the development and maintenance of best practice methodologies, work process documentation and procedures to ensure that the work performed is conducted in accordance with that documentation.
Define and recommend BI standards, processes and technologies.
Prepares development hours and cost estimates.
Creates development project plans.
Provide training and guidance on a regular basis to the BI team.
Provide administrative/user support for the reporting environments.
Responsible for the creation/maintenance of the semantic layer that business report writers will use for reporting.
Work with the data warehouse team to design and develop cubes and BI solutions.
Develop and maintain reports on as-needed basis.
Provide after-hours support as needed.
Participate in and lead quality assurance reviews.
Develop and maintain necessary documentation such as (but not limited to) entity relationship diagrams, dimensional models, system architecture diagrams, processes and standards.
Responsible for defining and recommending short and long-term technical reporting strategies.
Responsible for technology evaluations and proof-of-concepts of reporting solutions.
Responsible for the installation and patching of reporting environments.
Work with business to gather/analyze requirements to determine extent of reporting.
Participate (“Hands-on”) in the design and development of BI solutions.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / Computer Information Systems or related field or extensive applicable experience.
Must have 8
years of experience with business intelligence/reporting technologies.
A minimum of 5 years of experience working with Oracle Business Intelligence (BI Answers, BI Publisher, RPD)
A minimum of 4 years of experience working with with Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
Candidate must have 3-5
years IT Management experience, including 3-5
years systems support experience. Global experience is preferred.
Excellent organizational, oral, written, and presentational communication skills in order to work with all levels of staff and management.
Candidate must have the ability to translate technical information into terminology understood by all levels.
Candidate will need to have the ability to prioritize assignments, meeting deadlines, and handling simultaneous projects.
Ability to work independently and keep management adequately informed.
Candidate should be attentive to details and results oriented.
Candidate must have strong analytical, problem solving, and follow-up skills.
Candidate need to have a strong customer service orientation.
Knowledge of dimensional data modeling.
Experience working with Oracle and MS SQL Server databases.
Extensive datamart/business intelligence development and architecture experience.
Extensive experience designing relational (conceptual, logical, physical) and dimensional data models for datamarts/business intelligence.
Extensive experience deploying and supporting large, complex datamarts/business intelligence solutions.
Experience with project planning and management, including making operational decisions, monitoring progress, taking corrective action, and communicating results.
Candidate must have a strong customer service orientation.
