About the role

As the success candidate, you will work with the Head of European Affairs on National Grid’s EU engagement and the Brussels’ office key priorities, helping to shape policy messages, campaigns and advocacy strategies, this will include taking the lead in delivering political engagement plans to successfully achieve strategic outcomes for the business. Influence across a breadth of issues, activities and policies from the short to long term.

 

You will own key EU external relationships and provide support to National Grid leaders on their engagement with key stakeholders, pro-actively sharing insight and intelligence, we will look for you to Identify, create and maintain relationships across the EU political spectrum, including with MEPs, the Commission, think tanks, lobby groups and academics. Attend external functions and networking events to create opportunities for National Grid to influence politics and policy in a proactive way.

 

We would expect you to proactively analyse EU political developments (opportunities and threats) and insight and intelligence from multiple political and media channels, understanding their potential impact on the business and what Corporate Affairs should do to mitigate the impact, and document and distribute this intelligence in a timely manner to relevant internal stakeholders, and then where necessary take action.

 

 

You will draft and collate Public Affairs & Policy submissions for various leadership papers e.g. Board, Exec, Policy Review Group/Corporate Policy Review Group and leadership at a glance, also draft written responses in collaboration with colleagues to inquiries /questions from politicians/devolved administrations/EU stakeholders.

 

You will also lead the external engagement for a Shape the Debate campaign (Brexit), mapping key stakeholders and pro-actively developing and implementing stakeholder engagement plans working with Business Partners and other colleagues and using a wide variety of tactics such as events, sponsorship and social media or speaking opportunities to get messages across. Lead the campaign coordination.  

About you

To be successful at this role you will need strong networking, influencing and communication this will help you build strong relationships, excellent presentation skills and a confident and credible spokesperson for the business when representing the company externally.

 

We expect you to have excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to present complex business and technical matters effectively at all levels, track record of successfully communicating policy messages in a clear and concise manner to multiple audiences

  • 3-5 years of experience in EU public affairs, including developing policy messages, political positioning and integrated campaigning.
  • Knowledge & experience of all aspects of Public Affairs, including developing policy messages, political positioning and integrated campaigning.
  • Understanding of the EU political landscape, and key stakeholders, which relate to and impact on the utilities sector (governmental, regulatory, NGOs, communities, agencies, industry bodies).
  • Highly organised and strong attention to detail.
  • Results orientated, able to manage timely delivery in a challenging environment, and able to deal with rapid change, complexity and ambiguity.
  • Solid English drafting skills; other European languages a plus
