SAIC has an opening for an experienced Linux System Administrator. This position will require the candidate to have a heavy focus on Linux server and desktop support. The candidate will represent Mission Computing Services supporting Sandia's Center for Computing Research (CCR) Linux systems.  This position is very customer focused requiring interpersonal exchanges with the end user around the support and service of their Linux desktop systems and servers. 
The primary responsibilities include handling requests for assistance through various medium, including walk-in requests, email, and trouble ticket submissions.  This is a high visibility position and requires a willingness and ability to handle interruptions, and excellent time management and prioritization skills.  Ability to prioritize work and manage responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.  Drive and passion for achieving quality results.  
Daily work typically includes:
Desktop Support: troubleshooting and resolving technical issues with Red Hat or Ubuntu Linux systems, Linux OS installations and configuration, data migration, consulting end users on various hardware, software, operating system principles, documenting work in ITSM tickets, adding documentation to Knowledge Base. Deployment testing of Red Hat OS upgrades and patch delivery.
Server Administration: 
Maintain a  patching / update schedule for Center and Project servers, reviewing  system logs, maintaining uptime and availability, respond to alarms and  outages, managing user access, hardware troubleshooting and upgrades,  data migration and management, coordinating and monitoring system  backups, assist with planning future implementations of server hardware, virtualization, data center consolidation.
Participate in other project work that may arise in order to improve efficiency, or site-wide Linux testing and research to improve Linux provisions to the entire laboratory.



  • Bachelors Degree and 2 years or more experience OR 6 years of experience in lieu of degree; Or Masters degree and 0 years experience.
  • 2 yrs. demonstrated experience in Linux server and desktop support (Red Hat Enterprise Linux preferred)
  • Strong hardware troubleshooting experience
  • Motivated self-starter Installation and configuration experience of computer hardware, operating systems and applications
  • Experience troubleshooting network issues, knowledge of seven layer model, subnet/VLAN concepts
  • Ability to prioritize work and demonstrated task management skills
  • Proven documentation skills using a trouble ticket system (Remedy/ITSM preferred)
  • Excellent customer service skills and passion for helping people solve difficult problems
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance
  • Remedy / ITSM trouble ticket system
  • Ubuntu Linux Linux+ certification or LPIC-1 certification Red Hat® Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)
  • VMWare Workstation and ESXi Scripting
  • Knowledge of Git Repos and software development principles
  • Apache and Tomcat web server
  • IP Tables and Linux Firewalls
  • Mac experience
  • Familiarity with cyber security vulnerability assessments and mitigation
  • Active DOE security clearance
