SAIC has an opening for a Sr. Network Security/Firewall Engineer located in Springfield, VA.


This is a non-supervisory position for the Perimeter Security Division Firewall engineering team within the Vanguard 2.2.1 contract, providing technical leadership/oversight on multiple firewall and perimeter security systems and devices. The well qualified candidate will possess and apply resource management and project management expertise to help drive perimeter security projects. The candidate must be capable of planning and leading engineering activities to include the testing, implementation, and maintenance of perimeter security technologies and devices and must be capable of communicating and coordinating all firewall related work to the Firewall Manager to include the Government customer. 

The candidate must be capable of evaluating performance results, performing risk assessments, and recommending changes impacting the perimeter security team. This position is to specifically oversee and be the team lead on 8-10 resources.  The position directly supports DoS on-site to provide perimeter security protection to over 100,000 customers globally.


Responsibilities include: 

  1. Works directly with the DoS Perimeter Security Firewall Manager and customer to manage and oversee the build, design, test and deployment of perimeter security systems. 
  2. Drive and support Perimeter Security Firewall staff on all firewall projects and tasks.
  3. Must be capable of managing multiple high priority projects simultaneously and work with the Government customer to allocate resources to drive project completion.
  4. Collaborate with the customer and technical SMEs on Enterprise wide solutions, participate in technical working groups, and contribute to technical advisory boards.
  5. Directs compilation of records and reports concerning perimeter security firewall branch engineering project status.
  6. Oversees the transition to operations of perimeter security devices.
  7. Collaborate with Cross-Bureaus and Agencies to implement network changes as it relates to perimeter security
  8. Oversee the planning, documentation, and implementation of hardware and software build and refresh
  9. Create and maintain standard operating procedures and guides for new and/or existing perimeter hardware and software.
  10. Attend weekly teleconferences, onsite meetings, and participates in working groups, as related to constant changing security environment.


Required Education/Skills:
  1. Bachelors degree with 15+ years total of IT experience. additional experience in lieu of degree will be considered
    • 5+ years’ experience working directly with Government customer
    • 10+ years IT security/network engineering support experience (Tier II, Tier III, network infrastructure implementation and maintenance)
  2. 5+ years’ experience managing multiple medium to large scale IT projects in parallel. 
  3. Interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate effectively, self-awareness, and excellent written and oral communications.
  4. Firsthand experience in developing and providing quality assurance review of engineering change orders relating to the replacement or enhancement of perimeter security hardware and software
  5. Knowledgeable with Layer2/Layer3 technologies
  6. Candidate must be a US Citizen and possess a US “SECRET” security clearance and eligible for a Top Secret clearance
Desired Education/Skills
  • Technical Certifications are a plus: Cisco, Palo Alto Networks, A10, StoneGate (Stonesoft), Microsoft, Network+, Security+
  • Familiarity with DoS environment (data and voice networks, IT security systems, policies and procedures), Foreign Affairs Handbooks (FAHs), Foreign Affairs Manuals (FAMs)
