Job Description:
The Systems Test Directorate vision is to be a world-class leader in driving Test Affordability through the systematic application of Systems Engineering principles while ensuring an Operationally Relevant Product is delivered to the War Fighter.

The Advanced Test Systems Engineering Center (ATSEC), within the Systems Test Directorate, is comprised of five departments and an engineering population of approximately 450+ employees, and produces over $300M+/year of delivered products. The ATSEC organization has the responsibility to grow and sustain the Systems Engineering competencies throughout all test activities, and to make test more affordable, credible, agile, and robust.

Within ATSEC, the Advanced Test Operations & Environments (ATO&E) Department includes the Environmental Test (ET) organization, which has the direct responsibility of providing environmental testing services, instrumentation, and data acquisition expertise to all missile programs.

The Systems Test Directorate is seeking a Subject Matter Expert for the Environmental Test organization. The candidate will be responsible for the execution and oversite of environmental testing such as vibration, shock, quartz lamp, thermal, structural, and modal as well as vibration fixture design using ProE/CREO. All while collaborating in a team environment with ET Support Engineers, fellow ET Test Engineers, and internal program customers. The candidate will also be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the test including setup, control, monitoring, troubleshooting, and data collection. In this capacity, the candidate needs to possess an extensive knowledge of instrumentation and data acquisition systems, environmental test methodologies, and structural testing design and implementation, and fixture design principles.

Potential candidates will need to have a strong background in environmental test lab organization and operation and be able to make improvement recommendations to senior leadership on the implementation of newer testing techniques to increase accuracy, effectiveness, and efficiency.


  • Develop and verify test plans and procedures as well as review plans and procedures written by others
  • Oversee and conduct vibration/shock and temperature/altitude/humidity testing to validate models for the purposes of new product qualification, production acceptance, flight test clearance, engineering evaluations, and failure investigations
  • Oversee and conduct structural testing to validate models and ensure safety margins
  • Oversee and conduct aero-thermal heating testing using quartz lamps to simulate extreme heating environment during flight
  • Design, model, and analyze vibration and structural test fixtures
  • Train team members and other support personnel in the operation and troubleshooting of environmental test equipment such as shakers, thermal chambers, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems
  • Assist in creating schedules and budgets
  • Implement engineering best practices to ensure testing is performed accurately and on schedule

Required Skills:

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of technical/engineering experience in an environmental test environment with emphasis in test planning and execution
  • Extensive knowledge of vibration controllers such as LMS, Vibration Research, or Crystal Instruments.
  • Extensive knowledge of all types of instrumentation to include accelerometers, force transducers, thermocouples, strain gages, load cells, and displacement transducers
  • Extensive knowledge of data acquisition system hardware and software such as Dewesoft, DEWETRON, Somat, and National Instrument’s LabVIEW
  • Extensive knowledge of solid modeling and analysis software applications such as PTC ProE/CREO or SOLIDWORKS and ANSYS workbench
  • Able to perform successfully in an environment with frequent and direct interaction with customers and peers
  • Strong communication and leadership skills including effective written, verbal, and listening skills
  • High situational awareness and ability to effectively work multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience developing and evaluating requirements
  • Understanding and working knowledge of test equipment troubleshooting processes

Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Current DoD secret or TS/SSBI clearance
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Able to analyze test issues and define solutions
  • Experience creating strategies to support efficiency improvements
  • Patents, papers and publications in related technical field

Required Education:
Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related field (Preferred majors: Electrical, Aerospace, Mechanical, Software, Physics or Systems) and 10 years of relevant experience; Master’s with 8 years of relevant experience; Ph.D. with 6 years relevant experience
