Optical Engineer/Physicist

Description

ABOUT THIS POSITION

KBR is seeking an optical engineer/physicist to design, assemble, and operate experimental measurement and test apparatus to support research involving polarimetry for various applications. The primary task will be generating, manipulating, and measuring the polarization state of light (full Stokes polarimetry) using both coherent and incoherent sources of light. Most of the experiments will be carried out in the infrared (wavelengths from 1 to 10?m), but some experiments may include visible or ultraviolet light. Experience working in many wavelength ranges is desired. This position requires extensive hands-on experience with lasers of various types (solid state, VCSEL, gas, etc.) and in various operating modes (continuous wave, pulsed, mode-locked, etc.). The main applications require measurements on the microsecond time scale or faster. Some measurements will be performed on samples in cryogenic chambers requiring fiber coupling. Electrical measurements and stimulation of samples will be made in conjunction with optical excitation, so a knowledge of instrument interfacing, timing, and control of equipment is essential.

The selected candidate will design, assemble, and operate optical and electrical components for the production and measurement of the polarization state of light from the UV to the far infrared and use polarization of light to encode, transmit, and decode information in a basic communication system. The selected candidate will Identify or distinguish materials by measuring their Mueller matrices with laser pulses in various polarization states for the development of polarimetric LiDAR systems.

This position is located at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Sensor Directorate, Wright Patterson AFB, OH.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: PhD in physics, optics, or electrical engineering with extensive laboratory experience or an MS with at least eight years of hands-on experience.

Experience/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Good recordkeeping skills are required.
  • Ability to produce laboratory reports on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work as a part of an interdisciplinary team but able to work independently on small projects.

The selected applicant must meet eligibility requirements for a DoD security clearance, as well as the Air Force Research Laboratory requirements to access Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
