Our Ground Engineering (GE) team in Basingstoke is seeking a Senior Engineering Geologist experienced in providing specialist input to a range of civil engineering projects such as highways, railways, residential and commercial developments, harbours, coastal stability, infrastructure and flood defences.
To be successful the candidate will be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the industry with a proven track record in the delivery of technical projects and be fully conversant with the standards that apply throughout the industry. We are looking for an ambitious team player with the technical skills, knowledge and experience to take responsibility for technical quality, budget control of projects and provide leadership to junior staff. The position will suit a person who can lead the geological input to projects from desk study/feasibility through ground investigation to final design.
Our Ground Engineering team in the UK comprises around 190 staff, providing a comprehensive geotechnical service. The Basingstoke office traditionally has a diverse range of interesting projects in the UK and overseas and over nearly 100 years has built a reputation for successfully delivering ground engineering schemes in the UK and many other countries. We are looking to enhance and grow this team with individuals with a sound technical ability that share our enthusiasm and determination to deliver innovative, cost effective and buildable solutions.
The team provides Ground Engineering input including , desk studies feasibility, ground investigations, detailed design, construction drawings and specifications and construction supervision on a wide range of engineering projects. Our leading UK clients include Highways England, Network Rail, Thames Water, Environment Agency, Heathrow Airport, Rolls-Royce various Local Authorities, as well as leading contractors and developers.

Detailed earthworks design and ground modelling for Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station, Earthworks and Preliminary Works Contract.
Multi-million pound regeneration of Brent Cross Shopping Centre, including highway, local waterway and bridge design.
Design of the central section of the Thames Tideway Tunnel
Detailed design of the Phase IV coastal stabilisation works at Lyme Regis.
Design reviews/feasibility studies for new LNG port facilities in Ghana and Brazil.
Desk studies and ground investigation for Heathrow Terminal 2 Baggage Handling Facilities.
Ensuring collaborative working within a multi-disciplinary design team, to ensure work packages are delivered on time and within budget
Arranging and reviewing the results of desk studies and walkover surveys.
Leading a team that scopes, specifies, supervises and reports on Ground investigations in accordance with EC-7 and BSEN 5930.
Inputting to Geotechnical design of slopes and earthworks design as well as shallow and piled foundations and retaining walls. Where appropriate you will contribute to or oversee production of Geotechnical Design Reports to EC-7.
Providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior staff.
Carrying out regular design reviews in accordance with the company Quality Management System
As a Senior Engineering Geologist you will have relevant experience enabling you to have developed a range of engineering geological knowledge and skills.
You will have a working knowledge of UK geology, engineering geology and ground investigation practice.
You will be able to describe soils and rocks, appreciate geomorphological features, record your findings and write clear and concise reports.
You will have used software such as SlopeW, gINT/Holebase and the Rocscience suite and be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of CAD and geotechnical software such as the Oasys suite, REPUTE, PLAXIS and WALLAP would be an advantage.
You will be familiar with the UK Specification for Ground Investigation, the ICC Conditions of Contract and standards including BS5930 and BS1377 and be able to prepare specifications and contract documents.
You should be willing to travel within the UK and overseas for limited periods
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the industry with a demonstrable experience in UK soils and the technical support of projects and be conversant with the standards that apply.
You will have a valid UK driving licence;
A BSc, MSci or MSc in earth sciences focusing on geology and engineering geology is essential.
Chartered with the Geological Society of London or equivalent is essential.
Qualifications that include geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology or other related subjects would be an advantage.
A PhD in an appropriate subject would be an advantage
