Job Summary

Performs routine, standardized inspections of roadway and bridge construction to evaluate if construction conforms to NCDOT plans, specifications, and special provisions and appropriate materials and construction processes are used

Minimum Requirements

HS + 4 YORE or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education or HS + 4 YORE or AA/AS (US) + 2 YORE or Diploma/Certificate (Canada) + 2 YORE

  • 5+ years of NCDOT roadway construction experience

  • Requires NCDOT material testing and sampling certifications, current certifications preferred, or ability to attain within a +/-90 day timeframe as class scheduling allows:

  • NCDOT Concrete

  • NCDOT QMS Roadway

  • NCDOT Conventional Density

  • NCDOT ABC Sampling

  • NCDOT Borrow Pit Sampling

  • NCDOT Level II Erosion & Sediment Control

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

  • Occasional lifting of equipment or materials up to 60 lbs. and perform physical activities required of the testing procedures including squatting, bending, lifting, climbing and traversing difficult terrain

  • Good communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to effectively communicate with lower level technicians and project manager

  • Ability to recognize and solve constructions problems as they occur

  • Working knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry

  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures

  • Basic computer skills including use of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and use of iPad

  • Willingness to perform work after regular business hours, on weekends and holidays when necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Civil Engineering Technology or similar focus preferred

  • Engineering Interns (EI) may be eligible for this position with less than the required years of experience

  • NCDOT experience

  • General knowledge of surveying methods, equipment and material used in highway construction
