Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a Freight Rail Design Engineering Manager to join our growing Transportation team in Chicago, IL. The successful applicant will assume a design leadership role in an established Freight Rail Design Department. The successful applicant will lead in the recruitment, development and mentoring of junior Freight Rail Design team members, and assist with business development activities for locally-based freight rail clients’ opportunities. Candidates require a PE Designation and will have experience with conceptual and detailed design of freight and passenger railroad and rail transit alignments including profiles, cross sections, trackwork component design and layout. The ability to design complex track arrangements including turnouts, special track work and rail yards is desired. Candidate should have strong writing and communications skills and abilities to the lead design team and work with external and internal clients and stakeholders. The position will also serve as a project manager on various freight rail projects. Previous experience should include providing preliminary and final freight and passenger rail design (including experience with Microstation and Geopak), special provisions, and cost estimates for the Freight Rail and other clients requiring rail assistance. Experience working with Class 1 and short line railways and their customers is also strongly desired. Knowledge of construction management and recruiting, managing and mentoring staff is also strongly desired.


Additional job responsibilities may include:

  • Performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer.

  • Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures.

  • Works on detailed or routine engineering assignments involving calculations and relatively simple tests.

  • Proposes approach to solve new problems encountered using modifications of standard procedures or methods developed in previous assignements.

  • Identifies discrepancies in results.

  • Provides guidance to entry level engineers.

  • Performs work in accordance with agreed upon budget and schedule with little supervision.

  • Independently performs all the tasks necessary to complete primary design

elements for engineering works.

  • Performance at this level requires developmental experience in a professional position.

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS + 4 YORE or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering

  • Licensed professional engineer in the State of Illinois.

  • 7 – 15 years of railroad design and engineering experience with Class 1, Short Line railways and Rail Industry’s clients

  • Experience with Microstation, InRoads and Geopak software.

  • Positive problem solver with a flexible approach to work, commitment to excellence, motivated, and a strong team player with excellent mentoring skills.

  • Experience managing professional staff an asset.

  • Must be able to work collaboratively with other interfacing multi-disciplinary team members (other rail system engineers, as well as other civil, structural, electrical, mechanical and environmental engineers and technical staffs.)

  • Dedicated to the Quality Management of deliverables.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and is able to conduct and lead meetings with staff, clients, and stakeholders as needed.

  • Experienced in the preparation of preliminary to final track and civil design of freight and passenger rail systems.

  • Experienced with AREMA, FRA and FTA and Rail Clients’ Standards.

  • Maintain membership in industry groups and associations and contacts with representatives of Class 1 and Short Line rail clients including BNSF, CN, CP, CSX, NS and UPRR.

  • Experienced with Midwest States’ (Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana) Permitting Requirements.

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Knowledge of the Freight Rail Industry’s Engineering Requirements

  • Knowledge of Microstation, Inroads and Geopak Site Software

  • Experience with AutoCad and AutoCad Civil 3D.

  • Experience with Autoturn, and InRail.

  • Experience in Project Management.
