Job Summary

AECOM Transportation is actively seeking a Senior Signals Design Engineer to help lead our existing Canadian Signals team, based in our modern Calgary, Quarry Park office. This position is suited to an experienced railway signals designer, interested primarily in leading technical excellence and delivery using their thorough knowledge of signaling systems and design standards. The right candidate will be able to mentor and coach our next generation of engineers and technologists, while integrating the knowledge and wisdom of our more seasoned specialists.


AECOM has 6,500 transit-rail specialists across North America. Within this larger team, AECOM’s 185 person Canadian Rail and 25-person Alberta Rail practice is an established leader in planning, design and project management for freight and passenger rail projects. With S&C design hubs in Calgary and Mississauga, our team has completed several hundred million dollars’ worth of projects for VIA, CP, Metrolinx, Calgary Transit, Edmonton Transit, and many other transit agencies. The projects include Centralized Traffic Control (CTC), AWDs for crossings, control locations, yard automation, and communications (fibre and radio).

Our signals services include:

  • Track plans with system configuration.

  • Route and aspect charts.

  • Braking distance calculations.

  • Signaling circuits design.

  • Site specific plans.

  • Application software.

  • Crossing Safety Assessments.

  • Test and commissioning plans.

Key Responsibilities

As a senior design team member, the successful applicant will have multiple roles:

  • Senior technical resource and advisor for AECOM’s Signals team.

  • Provides specialized technical input to studies and design for staff's specific area of expertise.

  • Develops study and design procedures to facilitate high quality cost effective work by others.

  • Participates in interdisciplinary review of project deliverables.

  • Develops construction cost estimates and estimates of technical efforts for projects.

  • Uses expertise in all steps of completing discipline component of PS&E package.

  • Performs quality control review of design calculations or drawings.

  • Prepares technical specification sections.

  • Provides input to the development of engineering budget and schedule to meet requirements.

Team Management / Leadership:

  • Primary role as a Senior Signals design engineer.

  • Attend client meetings.

  • Act as the designated signals/systems specialist.

  • Comply with corporate safety, values and initiatives.


  • Projects will be for North American heavy-rail freight and passenger systems to AREMA standards, and LRT and Subway transit systems.

  • Perform design, review, and checking (up to 3rd level) for new and modified vital circuitry and application logic programs for automatic block systems, centralized traffic control, interlockings, and highway grade crossing warning systems.

  • Review own work and work done by others for adherence to applicable standards, rules and regulations, as well as all applicable client standards and signal design policies and procedures.

  • Prepare technical specifications.

  • Perform hands-on design.

  • Completing and overseeing technical signals designs from concept to construction, including P.Eng. sealing of final documents.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree (Electrical Engineering or equivalent).

  • P.Eng. Eligible.

  • 8+ Years Directly Related Experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 15+ years rail experience.

  • Experience in rail systems engineering outside of signals.

  • Consulting experience.

  • North American experience.

  • Comfortable in AutoCAD.
