Job Summary

Independently perform assigned tasks and provide technical guidance to Level I and Level II employees engaged in field and laboratory nondestructive evaluation activities. Work from Work Orders, Work Authorizations, OMI’s, NDEI’s or general instructions. Set-up, standardize and operate NDE test equipment and interpret results of nondestructive tests performed on equipment, systems, and flight hardware. Perform tests and interpret results in NDE methods such as: Radiography, Ultrasonic, Eddy Current, Magnetic Particle, Liquid Penetrant, Leak Detection, Visual/Optical, Infrared, closed circuit TV inspection, Acoustic Emission, Visual/Certified Weld Inspector (CWI), etc. Assist other higher rated employees and NDE Engineers in the development and establishment of improved testing methods and techniques. Work with the responsible Engineers, Management, foreign and domestic concerns to correlate test results and interpretations in compliance with specifications and design requirements. Conduct quality acceptance testing and procedure validation tests for assigned equipment, items and system. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on assigned equipment, as required. Perform work in other classifications when incidental but necessary to accomplish work assignments. Perform any work assigned to the employees in the classification. Performs compliance with Federal, State, local, NASA and Air Force laws and regulations and requirements and KSC/CCAFS energy management conservation regulations, collective bargaining agreements, security, safety, hurricane and other specialized programs or contractual requirements relating to the business of the section, working within the limits of established policy.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Guide and provide on the job training (OJT) in the applied aspects of NDE for employees of equal or lower rating.

  • Prepare formal reports and complete other appropriate documentation of NDE tests, showing results, conclusions, acceptance or rejection.

  • Contact other organizations, as required, to accomplish work assignments.

  • Operate NDE equipment, interpret results and process data, including use of computer based equipment that requires data input and retrieval.

  • Maintain test equipment, as required.

  • Observe all safety warnings and follow required safety practices. Follow all radiation safety instructions and assure operations are conducted in accordance with license requirements.

  • Use design drawings, specifications, mathematical tables, graphs, etc. to perform tests and interpret results.

  • Maintain logs and records, as required.

  • Performs other classification related and associated duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

IRRSP certification if qualifications include radiography. Must be able to acquire and maintain a government security clearance as required. Minimum of four (4) NDE level II certifications in accordance with ASNT practice (SNT-TC-1A and MIL-STD-410D), as required, to perform assigned tasks.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent plus four years related experience. Certifiable as NDE Level II per ANSI/CP-189, SNT-TC-1A and MIL-STD-410E in at least five of the following methods; Radiography, Liquid Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, Eddy Current, Leak Testing, Infrared, Ultrasonic or Visual(w/CWI). Must provide documented evidence (in hours) of formal training, qualifying experience and previous certifications. Radiography qualification requires submittal of previous radiation exposure history (NRC Form 5). Personnel will be required to obtain and maintain a secret clearance, various KSC and CCAS area access permits. Crane certification and confined space certification may also be required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Essential functions require a normal range of motion and the physical ability to bend, stoop, climb, sit or stand for extended periods; lift and carry up to 55 pounds; push, pull and position up to 400 pounds; work at heights and in confined spaces. Must pass initial and periodic physical examination required to perform above and to maintain government driver s license. Must pass an annual near vision and color perception eye examination IAW established personnel certification standards.
