Our Newcastle based Highways team currently has a vacancy for a Highway Engineer. You will take responsibility in all aspects of highway design to work on local, national and international schemes.

You will demonstrate highways experience, show both technical and leadership qualities and have experience of major/ minor highways design. You will be expected to work closely with our clients and take responsibility for delivering quality products to strict financial and programme targets. This is a great opportunity to join AECOM’s established highways business which continues to expand following several major project wins.

We are currently engaged on a range of interesting projects and there are a number of opportunities for you to be involved in the range of work secured and anticipated. Recent and current projects in the UK include HS2, a number of Local Authority improvement schemes (including junction improvements on the strategic road network) and work on Highways England’s £15bn Roads Investment Strategy, Smart Motorways Programme and Network Maintenance Schemes. Our services offered to our clients include the full range and scope of highways work from inception to completion across all the key discipline areas. We work on schemes through the development phase and planning and DCO procedure, preliminary design, detailed design, operation and maintenance and site supervision.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Work under the direction of Principal/ Senior Engineers to ensure that the job/ project accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the expected standards

  • Assist in the provision of technical inputs, across a range of specialisms in the field of highway engineering

  • Undertake a variety of tasks providing as an individual or through team effort, a range of design and written deliverables

  • Show technical competence and through experience, gather and take on board the skills of others in computer-based applications and tasks including the use of software such as Open Roads Civils 3D, Project Wise, WinDES, and the Microsoft Office Suite of programmes including MSProject

  • Undertake project activities in line with Company Policy, including technical and commercial aspects, as appropriate to the grade

  • Take an assistant role on projects within a particular skill area – e.g. drainage, pavements, geometric layouts etc.

  • Plan, lead and undertake site visits, as required

  • Plan and attend meetings – internal and external, as required

  • Liaise with sub-consultants and external parties, as required

  • Act as a mentor to others

  • Participate as a team member on a number of levels, including; office disciplines and projects

  • Be proactive and contribute to a safer work environment

Minimum Requirements

To be successful in this role we would like to hear from candidates who are able to offer experience and proficiency in two or more of the key areas;

  • Project management or asset management, alignment design, drainage design, pavement design and refurbishment, signs and road markings, safety barrier or asset inspection

  • Management of design and delivery of highway maintenance schemes

  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary environment, operating across a matrix of projects

  • Experience of preparing for and attending meetings with clients and/or statutory consultees

  • Experience of working with HE processes (i.e.Project Control Framework and Collaborative Delivery Framework) desirable

  • Experience of working in the Design and Build sector particularly preparing tenders for contractors

  • A highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills

  • Full awareness of Current Health and Safety Legislation and how it is applied to the design process

  • A willingness to consider local and national secondments and short term overseas assignments

Preferred Qualifications

For this position we will consider the following:

  • A degree qualified civil engineering graduate with relevant experience, preferably working in a highways design environment in either new build or maintenance and working towards Chartered Engineer status (MICE and or MCIHT)

  • HNC/HND qualified civil engineer with extensive demonstrable experience, preferably working in a highways design environment in either new build or maintenance, preferably with EngTech status and working towards IEng status.
