Job Summary

AECOM has a new job vacancy for a Civil CAD Technician to be based in our Chelmsford office. You will work with our wider Civil Engineering team on drainage and road layouts for our large-scale Building development projects in partnership with housing developers and public sector clients.

We work on everything within our developments boundaries and ensure that these connect efficiently with the external and normally publicly owned highway and draining infrastructure.

This position is for an established Civil Engineering Technician who is comfortable training up a couple junior technicians whilst also creating and editing 2D/3D models using computer-assisted design applications (AutoCAD, Infraworks, Civils 3D, MicroDrainage.

Your Responsibilities

Your role will be to create high-quality detailed technical drawings and plans based on our engineers’ sketches. You will use a variety of CAD software programmes to create these designs in 2D and 3D models.

You will require good attention to detail and it is important that you are a good communicator to produce accurate drawings quickly without the need for extra amendments where possible. Our work culture and methods will help you to work quickly and efficiently but it would be a benefit if you already consider yourself to have strong time management skills.

It would be beneficial if you have a blend of design experience in some or all of the following: design of highways, access roads, junctions, roundabouts and infrastructure of development projects (including road geometry, vehicle tracking, public realm, earthworks, pavements, drainage and underground services) but this is not essential.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop engineer’s concepts and sketches into accurate models and drawings.

  • Able to manage all in-coming and out-going models and drawing information.

  • A high level of computer literacy as well as spatial and design skills to be able to visualise projects in 2D and 3D

  • Attention to detail to create accurate drawings

  • You’ll have a desire to develop a career within the construction consulting industry and be willing to learn new software packages

Minimum Requirements

  • Relevant professional qualifications or demonstratable technical understanding

  • Work experience within a similar consultancy or other relevant business

  • Proficient in the use of Civil 3D, Navisworks and AutoCAD

  • Experience of mentoring junior staff members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A knowledge of drainage design from first principles, including piped systems, SuDS based systems

  • An understanding of the corresponding relevant first principles and design standards for example: MCHW, DMRB, MfS and local authority design guidance.

  • A clear work history and proof of professional development and learning

  • Ideally you will live locally to the office or be willing to relocate
