Job Summary
The Postal Manager ensures support to the program for delivery of items, distribution of mail, supplies, and materials.
Principal Accountabilities
(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract.)
  • Ensure department or other assigned area of responsibility handles incoming and outgoing deliveries, boxes, parcels, and mail in accordance with standard operating, safety, and security procedures
  • Supervise Mail Services staff involved in collection, sorting, metering, and delivery of mail and related parcel items
  • Establish delivery and pick-up schedules
  • Operate and instruct staff in use of mail equipment including high-tech inserter, computerized postage meter with scale and bar code reader, and automatic bundling and inserting machine
  • Organize truck yard and maintain current diagram for the yard, at a minimum identifying unique area for inbound mail, outbound mail, empty postal equipment, empty containers by size, mounted empty containers, load and off load areas, postal supplies, and equipment
  • Clearly identify (with labels and tags) all USPS equipment, with 100% documented accountability to military or government personnel
  • Resolve job-related issues of staff
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and make simple repairs during staff shortages
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide high quality, seamless customer service
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge & Skills
  • Prefer knowledge and understanding of US Postal metering machines and procedures, domestic and international postal and customs practices
  • Skilled in operating office machinery such as fax and copier machines
  • Ability to work independently with good decision-making skills
  • Ability to interact professionally with all levels of employees and customers
  • Will need to be trained and qualified in accordance with DOD Postal Manual – 4525.6M, dated 15 August 2002, before entering into postal duties
  • Valid driver license
  • Additional knowledge/skills may be required by assignment or contract

Experience & Education

  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in mail services or related field
  • Prefer experience in Military Postal Service or at US Post Office
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Additional experience/education may be required by assignment or contract

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

  • Prolonged standing, walking, or lifting of weights up to 70 pounds
  • Assigned to overseas locations where living and working conditions at assignment location could be remote and uncomfortable, with long hours, exposure to weather, dust, and hazardous/harsh conditions
