Job Summary

Purpose and Scope:

The software Engineer will support the NAS Fallon Range by providing software development, troubleshooting, and data communication development and troubleshooting. This will be performed within the engineering department and can be delegated to specific measured projects as well as equipment sustainment.

Essential Responsibilities:

Reviews software development and modification requirements and develops software and software modifications to address requirements. Thoroughly documents all code in accordance with standard software documentation best practices. Codes in an efficient manner. Performs software testing as needed. Develops training documentation to assist users. Consults with other engineering staff to evaluate interface between hardware and software; and operational and performance requirements of all systems.

Incorporates software modifications to the operational software as requested by the Government. Ensures that software modifications are properly submitted for approval and incorporation into baselines. Develops and directs software system testing procedures, programming, and documentation. Troubleshoots data communications between the CCS and external subsystems (such as the TIS, EWR, and ADDS) as they relate to software, and recommends software changes. Serves as member of the project engineering staff in support of special engineering tasking. Provides support of special engineering tasking for components of TACTS within functional area of responsibility. Participates in configuration management function, serves on the Change Review Board, adheres to configuration management procedures, and maintains baseline configuration management documentation.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

Typical office environment with no unusual hazards, occasional lifting to 20 pounds, constant sitting while using the computer terminal, constant use of sight abilities while reviewing documents, constant use of speech/hearing abilities for communication, constant mental alertness, must possess planning/organizing skills, and must be able to work under deadlines. Routine travel to remote site facilities may be involved.


Minimum Requirements

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

High School diploma or equivalent

Minimum Experience Required:

Three years’ experience in the following:

  • Programming Languages to include at least two of the following: FORTRAN, C/C++, Visual Basic

  • Assembly language on at least one supermini class computer and one microprocessor

  • Embedded microprocessor programming, protocol debugging, programming for real-time systems

  • Operating systems: UNIX, MSDOS, real-time executives or operating systems

  • Applications: MS Word, MS Excel, Excel macro programming in Visual Basic

  • Protocols/Standards: TCP/IP, POSIX, packet communications, synchronous/asynchronous communications

  • Ability to speak, read, and write English

Must possess and maintain an active DoD Security clearance.

Minimum Position Specific Training:

  • UNIX Training

  • TCP/IP Training

  • Windows Training

  • Possess a valid state Driver’s License

Certification Requirements

Must maintain CyberSecurity Workforce continuing education requirements and complete all required educational requirements/training in compliance with DoD rules, regulations and policies.

This position has been designated as a Cyber IT/Cybersecurity Workforce position in specialty area 44 (Network Services) and as a condition of employment incumbents of the position are required to comply with the DON Cyber IT/CSWF Program requirements of SECNAV M-5239.2, which include:

  1. Earn and maintain appropriate credentials from the Cyber IT/CSWF Qualification Matrix (described in SECNAV M-5239.2) associated with the specialty area and level commensurate with the scope of major assigned duties for the position to which you are assigned, and;

  2. Participate in a continuous learning program as described in SECNAVINST 1543.2. A minimum of 40 hours of Cyber IT/CSWF related continuous learning annually documented in a current individual development plan signed by both the employee and supervisor.
