We have a strong pipeline of work in Victoria and are seeking an Urban Planner to join our Environment and Planning team based in Melbourne. You need to be someone who enjoys working in a multi-disciplinary team because you will play a key role in the strategic planning and urban design of major city shaping infrastructure projects, including the Level Crossing Removal Project.

The role requires a strong understanding and knowledge of the Victorian Planning and Environment Act 1987 ; however we are keen to hear from candidates with a breadth of interests and experience including:

  • Transport Planning
  • Property Law.

Our team has a strong, friendly and amenable relationships focus, and the individual will have the ability to build workable relationships with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders through positive and effective communication. The successful candidate will work closely with the planning team and other specialist colleagues across the business, including industry experts. These include environmental planning and management, sustainability, project management, spatial science, urban design and water and transport engineering services.

Key responsibilities include providing statutory and strategic planning technical support through all phases of project development, completing land use and planning assessments and writing reports and plans.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with background research and analysis for projects, including preparing and presenting data for inclusion in plans, to support evidence-based decision making and informed planning analysis.
  • Provide support with planning assessments to enable compliance with relevant legislative requirements, policies and procedures.
  • Prove your urban design knowledge, experience and interest while supporting the Urban Design Team
  • Provide informed customer service, advice and solutions to internal and external stakeholders on a range of planning issues and priorities, and refer more complex matters to senior team members, to ensure a professional, customer-focused service and to meet stakeholder requirements and needs.
  • Collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to support the achievement of key project directions and priorities.
  • The completion of Land Use and Planning Assessments, Approval Strategies, Planning Permit Applications, Planning Scheme Amendments, Environmental Management Plans & Strategies and other planning related management plans
  • Provide analysis across a wide spectrum of planning issues including amenity (air and noise), flora and fauna, heritage, transport planning, urban design, structure planning and social effects, with specialist expertise in one or more of these fields
  • Broad understanding of, and experience in the application of Commonwealth, State and local legislation and regulations, policies and guidelines, with discrete knowledge of planning related legislation
  • Prepare high quality reports and provide commentary to management and project teams as required
  • Coordinate consultants/contractors, to ensure that quality, cost and time requirements are met
  • Ensure the relevant legislative requirements for planning assessments and approvals are understood and applied by relevant internal and external stakeholders
  • Consult, engage with, and influence internal and external stakeholders to ensure project success and stakeholder expectations are well defined and met (in particular land owners, local councils and communities, indigenous groups, government authorities and government departments

Qualifications & Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in urban planning or other related discipline
  • Post-graduate experience in an urban planning or related role
  • Experience in the preparation and delivery of planning and environmental approvals for major linear infrastructure (e.g. rail, road, gas, electricity), preferred
  • Sound, demonstrated and working knowledge of planning assessments and legislation as they relate to major linear infrastructure projects (Victorian specific knowledge preferred)
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills, with demonstrated ability to organise and undertake research
