Title:

Safety Specialist (Supporting JSC in Houston)

Job Summary:

Implements the comprehensive safety, health, and environmental requirements identified in KBR safety procedures and performs safety inspections for compliance with company, federal, and contractual safety requirements.

• Teach occasional safety and health courses to company and contractor employees

• Review, revise, write safety, health, and environmental procedures

• Champion the KBR Zero Harm safety philosophy

• Calibrate industrial hygiene monitors and similar field equipment

• Maintain safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental records and assist with the quarterly and annual hazardous chemical inventories

• Participate in safety inspections

• Assist laboratory personnel in compliance with the Chemical Hygiene Plan, the Bloodborne Pathogen Program, environmental compliance rules, and biohazardous waste requirements

• Advise science research employees in the areas of safety, health, and environmental areas

Education/Experience:

  1. Required: Bachelor’s degree in safety, industrial hygiene, chemistry, biology or other acceptable life science degree plus 2 to 5 years safety and occupational health experience; or Master’s degree in safety or industrial hygiene, chemistry, biology or other acceptable life science degree plus 0-2 years of safety and/or occupational health experience.
  2. Desired: Experience with NASA/JSC processes, experience as an instructor, and knowledge of prudent practices in a laboratory environment.

Skills/Training:

  1. Required: PC skills in Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel). Ability to create and deliver safety presentations. Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills. Ability to lead and motivate personnel to high standards of performance and increased efficiency.
  2. Desired: Ability to communicate effectively with research scientist, many of whom have advanced degrees.
